Hello everyone!

So again I feel the pull of the hobby, and this time the Horus Heresy is calling for me. I would really like to start a Legion force, but I am having lots of trouble choosing a legion to collect. I have a fairly good idea on the playstyles I prefer, and I certainly have a small list of favourites from a lore and color scheme point of view, but I would really like to know how does it feel to play them, and could really use some help. Here they are:

- World Eaters: always found them interesting and quickly became one of my favourites after reading Betrayer. They seem to focus on melee and to be a very "in your face" army, in the sense of risking being gunned down to quickly drown the enemy in chainaxes and win by sheer brutality. Also one of the most tragic legions in my opinion (that really wins my sympathy), and really like their almost cheerful color scheme (until it's splattered in red).

- Death Guard: one of my oldest favourites. Seem to also be focused on killing everything mercilessly, but mainly by shooting, and just advancing no matter what. Where the WE would slaughter at short range in brutal rage, these guys seem to be a colder, calmer version of "now you all die". I like their resilience, especially in terms of toxins, and their use of chemical warfare. A Cataphract Terminator always comes to ming when picturing DG in my mind.

- Alpha Legion: they have always intrigued me a lot. Careful planning, versatility and generally surprising the enemy with unpredictability seem to be their motto. I like how tactical and versatile they are, and how they can use other legion's units (seriously, that's awesome, I love these unique units). Their aesthetics are very unique too, among all 30k/40k armies (can't help but relate them with the sea).

- Thousand Sons: now these guys intrigue me due to how different they are from others (never played a psychic-centric army). I'm not usually interested by sorcerers and magic, but using powers in unison with more terrenal wargear sounds very interesting. From what I've seen, they can be very powerful but with a high risk of Perils of the Warp... which I don't really mind, as I like a component of randomness when playing, even if it means I'll lose sometimes because of it.

When it comes to playstyles, I tend to think in terms of how would I play in a shooter videogame (let's say games like Halo, Warframe, Planetside 2, Eternal Crusade), as if I were a legionnaire myself. Generally I'm not a passive player. I like to bring the fight to the enemy: usually I prefer to take more advanced positions as quickly as possible, and killing enemies at the same pace. Therefore, short range and melee tend to happen, and I really enjoy them, but I will stay at range in a more sniper/tank hunter way if needed. I am quick to retreat and dissappear if things get ugly... but there are times where keeping going forward, getting into short range, risking death and making it revolve around killing everything before they kill you and coming out barely alive feels very exciting and rewarding. Agile classes are cool, but so are armored behemoths, which I somehow always manage to infiltrate with (wild MAX Suit appeared). Abilities/powers are also cool and can open new ways of playing. For weapons, I am versatile but I have a knack for the heaviest and the most heavy hitting ones. Vehicles and stationary turrets are supercool and I take them whenever I can. While I do have these prefered playstyles, I can be very versatile and learn how to effectively use any class or weapon.

With all of this in mind, which of these legions would you recommend me to go with? How do they feel to play with? Thank you very much in advance!

Here are the legions you stated, characterized as a videogame characters...

World Eaters - Kratos from 'God of War'
Death Guard - Doomguy from 'Doom'
Alpha Legion - Solid Snake from 'Metal Gear Solid'
Thousand Sons - Starkiller from 'The Force Unleashed 2'

"jack of all trades, master of none; certainly better than a master of one"
The Ordo Reductor - the guy's who make wonderful things like the Landraider Achillies, but can't use them in battle..

This is great and highly accurate I knew I made the right choice with 'starkiller'

Based on your OP I would go with World Eaters. You like the fluff, the tactics and the color scheme which is kinda the magic triumvirate when picking an army in my honest opinion. They have some really cool options now as well with the newer books like that crazy medic who allows you to take blood thirsty initiates as troops just flooding the board with berserkers that are immune to pain an fear! Lol, honestly if I wasn't so in love with iron Warriors already I would prob be doing World Eaters.

“Victory is not an abstract concept, it is the equation that sits at the heart of strategy. Victory is the will to expend lives and munitions in attack, overmatching the defenders’reserves of manpower and ordnance. As long as my Iron Warriors are willing to pay any price in pursuit of victory, we shall never be defeated.” - The Primarch Perturabo, Master of the Iron Warriors

from what you have written I would narrow down the choices to world eaters and alpha legion seeing as you like the fluff of them the most and in your playstyle description you have (intentionally or not) described the alpha legion perfectly. when is began collecting a 30k army I chose the legion that appealed to me the most in the fluff and I was most able to relate and sympathize with as I think it's important that you play what represents you best as you will get more enjoyment out of it. for example I think that an army of iron warriors would be pretty cool to have but I wouldn't want to have one because I haven't the appreciation of their personality.
if you are more concerned about having a legion with a playstyle you enjoy then absolutely start the alpha legion as they fit your playstyle perfectly. my advice would be to read a few novels featuring them and see if they appeal to you in terms of fluff as well as you don't want to be stuck playing an army that has aspects you find unappealing as you probably wont find them as enjoyable to play.
