Looking for some opinions here. I'm looking to get into a new squad skirmish game and both Maelstrom's Edge and Beyond the Gates of Antares look pretty good. I've watched playthroughs of both games and have bought the MEdge .pdf to try out. But I was wondering if any here play both and what they thought about each game. MEdge looks to play smoother and Gates of Antares looks a bit fiddly to me, but I could be totally mistaken in that regard.

Any insight would be great.

Thanks...

I play both of these games, and honestly I prefer Maelstrom's Edge, gameplay wise.

They're both a lot of fun and pretty well built, but Gates has some fiddly rules that result in clearly dominant strategies. (Seriously, just take as many mag nets as you can and laugh as your opponent's units disappear)

Gates also has a higher average model count, with more expensive figures, pretty much all of which are in metal.

Between the two, I find Maelstrom's Edge to be a tighter, more competitive experience as well.

The "draw a die" activation system is fun, results in a lot of trash talk, and can be manipulated to a point, but games will often be decided by dumb luck as one player just draws activation die after activation die leaving their opponent with limited to no options to respond. This is impossible in Maelstrom's Edge.

Obviously, Antares has many factions and MEdge has only two, but the variation between the two MEdge faction is much greater than that in GoA.

Antares armies are, in many cases, nearly identical with only marginal changes from faction to faction and a couple of pocket special rules. Pretty much all the weapons are the same, the armor is the same, and everybody has access to the same pool of gear. The models look very unique and different, but they play pretty much the same.

I realize this response is almost exactly one month after you asked the question, but if you clarify what you are looking for in particular (model count, model quality, etc.) I could probably give you more specifics.

EDIT: I just checked the recent FAQ and it looks like they fixed the net issue. With that fixed, the balance should be greatly improved since my last impression. I may even break it out and try a few games.

Both games have miniatures that look like they missed the boat completely on the sculpting revolution of 5 years ago, so that's limiting their appeal in a big way.

Well, Gates of Antares has weekly or bi-weekly releases. Maelstrom's Edge is relatively dead.

So, if you want new content, GoA is the clear winner here.

It's my understanding that MEdge hasn't had much more than a "soft launch" once they got enough rules/components produced to make the game technically playable. The intervening time has been a ramp up to release a lot more content and flesh it out into more of a full release.

Given the quality of the gameplay, and the opportunity for feedback on the rules thusfar, I think the launch of the new factions and a v2 rulebook will see a few more people giving it a shot. The rules are all perfectly sound, just the melee attack mechanic and the organization could be smoothed out, and they're probably going to add the basic Broken and Remnant unit stats to the rulebook just like the current factions have.

Also, the fiction and background are pretty great. They just released another short story compilation.
