Recently I have fallen foul of my local council and received a fixed penalty notice for disposing of miniatures in my recycling bin. I did appeal on the grounds that the items were plastic but it was unsuccessful , see image. I always though these types of plastic were acceptable. Does anyone know anything more about why this has caused such a fuss my council?

I have recently attempted to paint some tau and wish to dispose of the kits as the plastic is bad quality again and the painting has come out terrible yet again, thanks GW. See image.

So I guess I just wanted to share with everyone my experience about what my local council is doing. I know I shouldn't but I'm throwing out more now, we shall see what happens.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Not sure on the matter myself but I do have a question: why are you disposing of perfectly good models and sprues?

Because of the bad quality plastic, did you see how the paint sits on those models, never seen anything like it in my life.

I have been throwing out boxes of Warhammer for years the bin men have never rejected it, personally I think there is some sort of personal discrepancy between you and your bin collectors.

I ruined a stompa the other day I threw it out fully built and they still took it I would re appeal.

I have.

But it requires me to ask a few dicey questions...
What paints are you using?
Are you priming things first?
Are you thinning your paints down, whether with water or a thinning medium?

Because truthfully, it seems like you're just slathering paint onto the models and calling it a problem with the plastic.

I didn't think you could ruin an Ork model let alone not be able to salvage some of it.

Generally that sort of plastic can't be recycled, and would probably go into a Burnable Waste skip at the local tip. I think GW stores used to accept bits of sprue and things for disposal, but unsure now.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Because he's cranky, apparently.

Well,. duh, your attempt to appeal was unsuccessful. YES, you can recycle styrene, BUT it's not the same process that PET bottles, for example, go through.

The council probably has a list of what types are plastic are acceptable to recycle - usually it's like recycle codes 1-2. Styrene's number is one of the higher ones.

So if you threw plastic that they can't recycle into the bin for the recycle bin, yeah, that's why they dinged you.

I'm using citadel paints, primed in white and thinning with water and lahmian medium.
I've been painting for over a month now and I feel quite experienced now, but the amount of bad plastic I've had to throw out is ridiculous, I only have 1 drone left that was decent.

8th doesn't seem that bad though.

Seriously though; what Kanluwen said. What did you prime it with?
Looks like the usual GW plastic (which is pretty good in my experience).

Well it doesn't say on the box they are not recyclable, I will be writing to them again and to my MP.

I will ask my local store if they accept it, I just hope they don't try to re-sell it or something because it is terrible plastic, I wouldn't want someone else suffering like I have; 3 starter boxes in the bin so far.

Yea I have managed to salvage a drone so far though which I think is an improvement. It begs the question though how many people are buying multiple sets of units just to have to throw them.

Doesn't look like bad quality plastic, I'm sorry mate but it looks like a bad paint job (I know cause it looks like models I've painted before).

Sorry, before I judge, could we see a comparison image of some of your other models (preferably with a similar paint job).

You CAN recycle styrene, but it's a different type of plastic than say, soda bottle. Most community recycling programs only take plastic types #1-2. Drink bottles and the like. Styrene is #6 (I looked it up.) It's not GW's fault that your council doesn't recycle that.

But really, it's funny how in the ENTIRE world, you're the ONLY person afflicted by this 'bad plastic' problem.

Yes, yes, I'm sure that plastic is the problem...

Are you washing the sprues before applying primer?

I wonder if you have a batch of plastic with a heavier than usual amount of mold release on it. What you are describing with your paint (and from the photos you shared) it looks exactly like what happens with resin models that aren't washed properly.

This one came out much better, you can see how the paint sticks to the model so much better.

I give them a wash in soapy water before assembling, all goes well until I paint them and realise the plastic is bad. To add insult to injury I've now been fined by the council. What a world.

Please, i'll be happy to receive your throw away "bad plastic".
Expeditions are on me. Whenever you feel the urge to throw away intact sprues, PM me, i'll provide address and pay for the expedition.
Also, if you really think that could be a plastic problem, try wash it with soap (not scraping it, just washing) EDIT: oh i now read that you wash it...ok.
Also, try to go to the local GW store, if any, or contact them at customer service... but you should in fact send me your stuff. That would be wiser and eco-friendly.

EDIT2: maybe it's a colour related problem. Shaked the pot enough? Too much lahmian medium?

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I don't know what to say, it just looks like to me that your paint is a bit watery so you aren't get an even finish, sometimes the GW plastic doesn't help but it isn't impossible to paint on. I've had plastic like that before, usually giving it fair good amount of layers fixes any unevenness in the paint job.

I'm sorry but I couldn't burden anyone else with this bad plastic, it would just be a waste of paint. Maybe 1 out of 5 boxes are actually ok.
