Hi,

I'm just getting back into 40k after quite a long absence. I am pretty familiar with the lore, but I have never read a 40k fiction book before. I'm looking on the GW website at the moment and there is quite a bit of choice!

So what would you all recommend as a good first book/series to get stuck into? I am not overly interested in space marines, so if there is a good book that focuses on eldar/tau/tyranid/imperial guard or the like, then that would seem good.

I'm just a bit worried about starting to read something, and then realizing that it references lore from other books previously that I have not read etc.

Thanks

Dead Men Walking - it is about Death Corps of Krieg and the best guard novel IMO.
Horus Rising - first book in Horus Heresy series and also good introduction into the lore.

Enforcer was also an enjoyable read

Gaunt's Ghosts. It's one of the more 'grounded' 40k books so if you're trying to get back into or be introduced to the setting it's not a terrible place to start. That and, y'know, it's well written.

Depends what race you play as. I find that reading something that involved my dudes is always more enjoyable. Also think about reading 40k comics, they're quite good and very pretty. You can find a massive list of comics for 40k here: http://imgur.com/gallery/t4EMg

Also other generally great reads involving 40k lore would be:
- Gaunts Ghost
- Dark Apostle
- Horus Heresy books
- Ciaphas Cain books
- Eisenhorn books

Basically if its Dan Abnett, its good stuff.

Seconded on that one, brilliant book. Really made me like the Necrons as well.

I also recommend 'The Carrion Throne' which is a recent release set on Terra.
C'etait formidable as the French would say!
