Just wondering if anyone else is planning on running their DC's with boltguns instead of boltpistols. If you get into charge range you can rapidfire to soften your target up even more. I realize that once you are stuck in you will lose out on the opportunity to shoot but I feel like the front loaded damage would be worth it.

It makes sense depending on the unit rules. Can death company charge after they advance? If not, it may indeed be worthwhile to carry bolters since a normal unit can only charge after it makes a normal Move (meaning it can shoot).

If you could advance+charge then I'd probably say no, as you'll be spending the whole game running at the enemy.

I agree with that. To the best of my knowledge I don't believe that they have a way to charge after advancing. But I am still really new to the 8th ed rules

Bolters worked well in 7th when DC had Relentless. In 8th I don't think it is so good as DC really want to be assault which means a chainsword for the +1A (or a power weapon for the -3AP) and a pistol to shoot with.

YMMV

Chainsword they have anyway. For shooting you have better shooting up front and only lose if you are still in combat in your turn and basically that needs to be in TWO of your shooting phase in same combat to be better. That means after 4 combat phase you are STILL in combat(3 if you got charged instead). If after 4 turns of combat you still are there something is going badly likely and few pistol shots aren't doing much likely anyway...

Pistol is funny enough h2h upgrade you don't ever WANT to be using.

Just check the Index and their basic kit is bolt pistol and Chain sword. They can then swap just the bolt pistol for a bolter (still have the chainsword)

As both the Bolt pistol and Bolter are 0 points, I'd take the bolter for the extra range damage and then a double tab before charging, with either gun it's still 3 attacks and you only loose out on shooting if you're locked in combat for 3 turns.

I don't think the extra pistol shot is worth the extra range and shots a bolter can put out. It's worth it for things like plasma pistols maybe, that hit just as hard or harder than a lot of melee weapons.
