Now we all know that there are some differences between the Space Marine Legions in between the Horus Heresy and the current Millenium. But then there are some that we just liked better back then rather than now. So what Legion do you like better during 30k? Me personally, The Legion I think I liked better in 30k is non-other than the first Legion, the Dark Angels. In 30k The Dark Angels were practically the Aces of the Legions and represented what a Legion organization was, plus they had a badass black knight stick to them. In 40k they are mainly portrayed as an army of emos who hunt a bunch of arseholes who fethed up their entire stick. Now I don't despise the current Dark Angels, as they do have some interesting things to them (Especially those RavenWing guys) But I think they were much better during the Horus Heresy. The World Eaters are another I would consider liking better pre-heresy as well, mainly because nowadays they are simple bloodthirsty maniacs and aren't even a Legion anymore, plus they had an awesome color scheme.

The third legion. This is why I'm currently collecting an Heresy era Emperor's Children army, and not a 40k one.
But I do like their fall and their path to damnation, it's just the color scheme and I'm not a Chaos guy so...
They were so prideful, so great, before !
Conversely, I think Blood Angels are better after the Heresy, as the lost of their Primarch is a great tragedy and is really important.

Pretty much voted for any Legion that went into the loony bin after the Heresy. And the Thousand Sons, because they never grew back to Legion strength.

World Eaters, I love there feel in the HH. They're still a legion, led by a broken primarch.

In 40k, they're just all variants on khorne followers basically.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

I voted Emperors Children, Death Guard, and World Eaters, on the basis of the aesthetics alone.

Dark Angels, because their whole secrets within rumors within circles jerks within Masonic ritual stuff in 40k is, quite frankly, annoying as f***.

World Eaters, because 40k Khorne Berzerkers aren't very interesting to base any real story on that doesn't involve "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!"

Thousand Sons, because I thought they were the most boring 40k Chaos Marines you could find. Just some golems wondering around with Ahriman. Then I read the HH novel A Thousand Sons and was blown away by how awesome they are. It still remains as my favorite Horus Heresy novel.

Voted for emperor's children as I'm not a fan of Slaanesh and their FW color scheme is badass. Also, their rules in 40K don't really work as long as there is no CC-unit for them.

I thought about Sons of Horus, but basically that legion was totally destroyed. It's hard to say whether the Black Legion is the actual successor.
It's interesting to see the wide spread of votes, as imo many legions haven't really changed at all, Night Lords for example. As far as I understand it, the loyal legions have been shrunk to puny chapters, but other than that they kept their doctrines and all. Not that familiar with the loyalist scum though, maybe there's something I don't know.

Night Lords can have effective terror troops beyond "DUDE RA[TORS LMAO" and actually play up, y'know, the whole fear thing.

Iron Warriors I feel have some really thematic, immersive rules that nail that theme of attrition, grinding warfare with artillery cover. Sure, it's not as flashy as the other Legion's stuff but that unto itself is very fitting and a big part of why I like 'em.

Overall I prefer just about every Legion in 30k compared to 40k though. The weakest is probably Death Guard but I suspect that's because they had to share the 'attrition' theme with the IWs and getting chemical weapons isn't quite as exciting as a lot of the other stuff. Of course Siege of Terra ought to see them get some amazing stuff.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Wouldn't it be easier to ask if anyone actually prefers any of the legions in 40k rather than 30k? I feel like, apart from a few stories, the legions were written far better in the HH series than in 40k fluff.

I'd say the only Legion I prefer more in 40K is Alpha Legion, because no one cares about them, so we don't hear a thing about them.

I can't stand how they are represented in 30K.

Otherwise, I prefer them all. I've grown tired over the years of the "regression" that grips everything in 40K, to include all of the Space Marines.

Ultramarines. I don't even dislike the 40k Ultramarines, they're just boring. White Scars too.

Actually, in general ALL the legions were more interesting then the modern chapters. The drama of the Heresy and the larger-then-life personalities of the Primarchs allowed individual legionaries to be more passionate and human. A tad less Stoic Warrior Monk.

Wondering Why the Emperor Left

To pick just one I'd say that my favorite 30k>40k change is the Emperor's Children. I really like the focus on martial prowess and executing battle plans perfectly, like a well coordinated dance. I love their aesthetic, their chapter-specific units, their imagery, their color scheme. Pity I don't like their primarch or Eidolon, but all's the better because I can make my own warlord! I dislike the excess that the Emperor's Children show in 40k. They are disorganized, random, anarchic and completely unreliable. They're not even arrogant or charismatic anymore (my personal favorite trait of Slaanesh). They're just extreme.

I feel that the least changed Legion is between 30k and 40k is, perhaps ironically, the Sons of Horus and Black Legion. They retained both their "we're the Legion that can do everything really well" aspect in terms of sheer variety of troops, and their "Tip of the Spear, Warmaster's Chosen Elite" aspect. Not to mention the wild independence of their warlords and leaders, reflecting the competitive nature of Cthonia. They literally changed the most in terms of aesthetic, name, and leadership. But practically they changed the least. Probably why I feel happier playing 40k Black Legion than 30k Sons of Horus. In 30k, the SoH feel like they're all just support characters for Horus. One of those "show me, don't tell me" failing in forms of characterization when it comes to Abaddon and the Mournival (with the exception of Loken, hence why I think he's so well loved). In 40k, Horus' overwhelming charisma and awesomeness is gone, so all of the support characters get to really shine both in game-play and story.

Most 40k chaos cult elites are mindless minions of their gods. All the character and personality of that legion has largely given way to this mindlessness.

Sons of Horus. I love the disparity between the original Terrans and the later Cthonians. I love the idea of Cthonian gang markings appearing on the Armour and up high ranks over the course of the Heresy as the Cthonian legionaries become more and more the core of the legion.

Almost all of them, but especially the Thousand Sons and World Eaters. They look much better without all the chaos stuff and they have such great fluff that its a pity they fell and got more 2D.

Alpha legion, cause it annoys me that act like wannabe word bearers in 40k. Also loved legion. Reading that book sent me on a slaanesh fueled high that forced me to repaint my legionnaires into black legion cause my alphas weren't alpha legion-ish enough for my liking

Night Lords, cause they're rules just feel right in 30k and stuff actually runs away there.

Sons of Horus, mainly cause they're written better than I expected and it was pleasantly surprising

1k sons cause the novels were ace and 40k 1k sons are were kinda meh prior to HH novels.

I kinda prefer 40k emperors children only because 30k emperors children in the novels are just plain unlikable and such whiners. You dont hear enough about the 40k ECs to form too much of a strong feeling imo

Pretty much all the loyalist legions, sans the ones which didn't really change much between 30k and 40k like the Salamanders.

Conversely, I like all the traitor legions in 40k much more then their 30k incarnations. The unapologetically evil 40k chaos Marines are far more interesting then the faux-sympathetic legions of old.
