My understanding of the rules is that all units in a given detachment need to share a common "Faction Keyword". This might be "Astra Militarum", "Adeptus Mechanicus", "Adeptus Custodes", or "Inquisition" as a few examples. These keywords, combined with the way unit entries are organized in the Imperium 2 book make it seem like all units in a detachment must share this keyword, HOWEVER, I have also noticed that every unit in the book has the "IMPERIUM" keyword. Does this mean that I could legally create a Brigade Detachment with every single unit belonging to a different Imperial "sub-faction" than the next, so long as every unit shares the "Imperium" keyword? RAW seems to support this, but I haven't seen any talk about this. If this is not permissible, things like Inquisitors and assassins won't legally fit into Imperial armies that do not share their "sub-faction" keywords. What are your thoughts? Is this detachment legal? Is it battle-forged?

Oh yeah. "Imperial Soup" seems to be taking off as the name for building an army that way at my FLGS.

(The downside to freely mixing and matching is that most buffs are restricted to your sub-faction, so HQs are much more effective force-multipliers when you build your whole army with fewer keywords.)

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

You can but you only benefit from abilities if they share the same sub faction so for example a guard squad won't get rerolls of one from a space marine captain.

LOL "Imperial Soup"

Makes sense in terms of Rules As Written.

I figured as much, but good to point out for those who might not be playing close attention to the nuances of the rules.
