I was under the assumption that each battalion had to be from a very specific sub-faction. With the implementation of keywords, I've seen some claim that you can mix and match imperial units or eldar units.

I'm wondering, what constitutes a faction as far as the detachment system is concerned?

Edit: furthermore, can different detachments be from different factions?

If faction is such a loose definition, and if detachments can be taken from different factions, then a battleforged list of today can resemble an unbound list of 7th with the detachments available.

Every Faction Keyword denotes a faction. As long as one keyword in that part of the datasheet is the same across all your units, you're good.

So since all eldar are Aeldari, you can freely combine all of them into a detachment?

Also, if you chose Ynnari, then you lose your inherent rules for other eldar and gain soulburst/strength from death. But if you just freely combine otherwise, you would keep all of your inherent rules.

So marines, AM, assassins and the like all share Imperium and can be combined into a single detachment?

Yes, as long as there is one faction keyword in common for everyone. Some units in the detachment might not be able to take advantage of special abilities from other units because they don't have the right specific keyword. For example, Astra Militarum unit can't issue orders to an Adeptus Astartes unit because the Marines don't have the right keyword to receive the orders, but they can be in the same detachment because they both have the Imperium keyword.
