Is there a general formula I can apply for working out the outcome % for different numbers of wounds given a number of hits.

For example:
No of hits = 18
Roll to wound = 2+
{A} How many outcomes total are there?
{B} How many outcomes result in exactly 11 wounds?
Therefore allowing me to calculate {B}/{A} = % chance

Okay, so your high school math course will probably cover this, but here goes:

A) What do you mean by outcomes? A dice has 6 sides so the equation would be 6^n where n=number of dice rolled. Rolling 18 dice there are 6^18 total combinations. If you are only counting binary results (IE 2+ is a success) then there are 2^18 combinations.

B) So the question is rolling 18 dice, how many combinations result in 11 wounds exactly? That seems an odd question. Perhaps you mean what are the odds of rolling exactly 11 wounds, or put another way, exactly 7 "ones"?

Or, for the more practical answer: http://stattrek.com/online-calculator/binomial.aspx

@OP - there are dice-rolling simulators that you can use to provide the result and likelihood of 18x 2+ d6 tests.

Or you can lay out 18 d6, and manually iterate from 1,1,1,1,1,1... through to ...6,6,6,6 by turning 1 die at a time.

Though I'd note you can start with 1d6, then 2d6, then 3d6 to track the pattern of successes / failures to see how the distribution changes.

Thanks Whilst this didn't solve my problem in the practical sense that I wasn't going to manually generate the 1300+ data points I needed, it gave me enough information to use the right search terms to find the answer I was looking for
