Subject: Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 29 July 2017: Fun and Games
Welcome all to the 29th round of the Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka. For anyone who's unfamiliar with the format, this is a simple community challenge open to anyone on Dakka, the aim of the game being to paint a model or set of models relating to the month's theme and win points for doing so!
This month, the theme is 'Fun and Games'. As always, this is open to interpretation however you like, but the idea is that your entries should be something of specific use for gaming, such as objective markers, turn/wound counters, status markers, terrain pieces or other useful items. There's nothing to say these can't include models or elements of models, but ideally they shouldn't just be models you'd put down on the table and use in a game (unless of course that's appropriate to the theme, for instance Blood Bowl or Guild Ball models, or comedy miniatures like the White Dwarf or similar).
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of July and will end at midnight BST on the 31st of July. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

This was going to be one of a set of 3 Badab War themed objective markers, but time got away from me this month so for now it's just this one, depicting a pair of Howling Griffons on the battlefield, one grievously injured.

I think I’ll do the crashed lander from the Battle of Macragge box. Maybe an ammo dump or some little force screens. I’ll get a pic once The Boy is no longer camped out in my hobby room.
I dont think I've got anything for this month. Just cracking on with my marines, so not really anything that fits. But good luck to everyone. This should be an interesting month - more variety than your usual month
Dark Angels/Deathwing - just getting started!
Space Marines - Stark Crusaders 4500pts/PL244 (2700pts painted)
Eldar - Biel Tan 2000pts
Space Wolves 1500pts

We are in the same boat, I think. Unless somehow Primaris Marines fit in the theme (highly doubtful) I'm going to sit this one out.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Remember to take a proof pic, although I'm not sure what you'd take it of. A bit of wood?
Automatically Appended Next Post: While I'm here, I think this is what I'm going to paint this month. My Sylvaneth Wyldwood. I don't think I really get the theme this month. Game pieces rather than models, but Blood Bowl teams are okay? Is it just that if a model fits the "fun and games" theme ignoring the instruction about painting game pieces, then that's okay? I do have loads of Blood Bowl stuff to paint, as it happens, so I might change mid-month! I do need to get this wood done, though.

As always, the theme is open to interpretation, so terrain/markers ect fit it in the sense that they are used to facilitate the playing of a game, whereas Blood Bowl minis for example fit it more literally as they are actually model playing a 'game', if that makes sense. An argument could then be made that any model you'd use in a game would therefore count. but the spirit of this month's challenge is to encourage people to think outside the box a little and come up with something different to the normal entries we get.
Hope that makes sense!

Sadly, it might make June my last comp. Baby's due in August so probably won't have painting time then, or for quite a bit of time afterwards.
Although my gaming buddies have arranged a final pre-baby game for me at Warhammer World, so that'll be a nice way to bow out of the scene for a while

Would a diorama count? Or would some terrain fit the theme better.

Congrats Whittlesey, I just about managed to find the odd hour or 2 (when not feeling knackered) to do some painting after my first one in Jan last year, still hard to hard find the time now. It is nice to occasionally escape and do some painting to relax a little. Hope it all goes well
For my entry I think I will go for the absurd (for a change) and go for a "Ork Fun Fair" I had ideas to do several different rides but I will have to tone it down a bit and just go for an Ork playing a Whack-a-mole (snotling) game, fun and games for everyone
Proof pics would just be pieces of plasticard atm so I'll take one when the idea is a bit more formed and I've worked out a few of the bits to go in it (might even draw a picture!)

So is my board idea for armies on parade ok or not. Its a scenic piece by itself so hopefully. Im thinking if blood bowl minis are ok the dioramas and the such should be ok to.
Im not actually doing the models yet so hope thats ok. Other wise those pesky blood bowl players will be seeing some love.
I think I'm as confused as feltmonkey.

Okay, so I am planning to do my first large diorama. it's also in teeeeny scale. (not epic bit still small).
is this A. okay and B. can I post a picture of the first little one I did for people to give some tips on?
my reasoning for this piece is its to play around with dioramas and try some new painting techniques, just for fun.

I'am doing something a bit different Fallout3 Necromunda Crossover Objective Marker Set.
Proof pics below stuff i'am using, type of bases i used for the sewer theme,I did make them a while ago,but fresh out of bases, they are just simple card painted grays,Caliban green & Nurgles rot in the sludge channel, hope its okay as proof,if not it's fine.
Anyway,Remember that Fallout3 Quest in the Pit where you have to gather "Steel Ingots" In order to Gain Rewards,Yeah well i'am going to do that but in the "Sump" for the non necros out there, that's the bottom of a hive city, basically a mega-sewer,should be an easy one for me for obvious reasons.
Bit's i'am using. (razor wire, straw bits, card type used on the sewer bases, sprue for the ingots, and a couple of bits from the box, cog&mushroom upper right)
Bases used for the sewer/sump theme.
8th is out, time to work on stuff from the 4th starter box. I’d do the ruins from the 3rd ed box, but would need to prime them. Might do some barrels/tank traps from there, time permitting. But I suspect this is going to be a lot for the month, especially as I’m taking a week at the beach, which will cut into my hobby time.
that's a nice bit of kit, that one...ok, it might not be the most useful terrain for gameplay purposes, it doesn't really provide much cover or anything, but it's great for scattering the wreckacge along the table and placing an objective at each part...or for setting up some kind of narrative game
...I kinda wish they'd kept including bits of terrain in the starter sets...it was a nice addition.
still no idea what I'm going to do this month honestly...hopefully I'll think of something that'll work, before it's too late in the month...it'd be a bit of a shame to skip a month...meh, we'll see
...it's good to be green!
