My room mate and I are looking to get into the game and both have chosen the armies we'd like to start with. He has chosen Circle and I chose minions, mainly the gatormen part. After reading for the last few days I have come to realize that minions are not a heavily played faction and considered an outlier of sorts. So here are a few questions/concerns I have.

1. How do Circle and Minions match-up? Are there hard counters on either side to the other?

2. From what I have read minions don't get updated as often as Circle does. Can anyone confirm this?

3. If minions might not be a good choice to go against the circle, what other army might play close to them that would be a better choice?

Thanks for the input

Minions are not a strong faction to begin with mostly due to the fact that other factions can choose to take your troops/solos into their own armies (and even can take your warbeasts with certain solo selections). You have way less selection of everything, except battle engines, that any of the main factions.

If you want to play gators then your options are even more limited but the blindwater theme helps, a lot. Due to the lack of choice amongst your casters you will have an uphill battle against anyone.

I'm not sure what the update schedule will be looking like due to PP's decision to change No Quarter into the way it will publish/show new models.

The other main factions are all good matches against Circle it just depends on what's on the board at any given time. And don't forget that you can choose Warmachine factions to go against any Hordes faction. I wouldn't select Mercs or Convergence as starting armies but anything else should be OK.

Gonna answer your questions from m veiwpoint.

1 - In my experience, there's not a ton of hard counters for either army, but there are a few circle casters that will make your life suck if your buddy buys them, and if you buy heavy into the gator theme force, you can make his life suck royally with enough posse units.

2- They dont get anywhere near the amount of updates all of the main factions receive. PP themselves said that the smaller factions, such as minions and mercs, CoC and even the new grymkin will not be getting as many new models. So what you have is what you'll be using for awhile. IF gators get boring, buy farrow, they are really fun as well.

3- Despite what the internet says, there's not a huge gap in power levels between armies, a lot of it is pick the guys you think look cool. Most of the factions can be played in so many different ways just on warlock alone, you shouldn't get bored easy. Look at the aesthetics, and go for it. You want an army of half dead desert people who beat their beasts into submission? Go skorne. Want the "good guys" from hordes? Go trolls. Want an army thats mostly beasts that are spawned from the warlock's own blood that are midget dragons? Go legion. Theres tons of play, but pick a different faction before getting too deep in something thats not a main faction in m opinion.

Minions definitely lacks the options other armies have and they dont get as much attention as the main armies, but they are absolutely still playable. I also really like the gatormen and plan on starting an army of them soon. I would highly recommend using the blindwater congregation theme force as it makes the gatorman posse (most likely the core of your army) just awesome. One thing to keep in mind is that all of the units and solos you collect can easily be included in another faction, so all it would take for you to branch out in to a main faction is a warlock and a few beast. Here is a 75pt blindwater list i have been toying with:

Maelok the Dreadbound (+28)
Blackhide Wrastler (-16)
Blind Walker (-12)
3× Min Gatorman Posse (-10) -30 total
Max Croak Raiders (-17)
Wrongeye & Snapjaw (-17)
Gatorman Bokor & Bog Trog Shamblers (-11)
Bullsnapper (free in theme)
Gatorman Witch Doctor (free in theme)
Total: 103pts

Thanks everyone for the info. What you all have said is what I assumed was true. I also really like the look of Cryx so I might go that route instead

Just know that Cryx is a hordes army so they will have a lot of models, which is both expensive and time consuming. Not a make a break for sure, just good to know. Any of the armies in either Warmachine or Hordes are all viable. Pick the one you like the looks of the most, then do research on their casters, those are what really define how yoyr army will play.

Gators look cool and with the Blindwater list (No Quarter 71 I think), the Posse is better than it is in when included with any other faction, i.e., it has more boxes, special abilities, etc. I'd look into this. The list also allows you certain free Gator units with every 10 points of Gatorman units.

Rask is a decent caster. And Barnabas is rock hard.

As said before, might be a good moment to get into gators soon since they will get some new stuff and become quite a good faction from what was spoiled during LnL
