Hey guys I'm doing a commission of Space wolves with the new Dark Imperium set and these are probably my single least favorite chapter so I know nothing about them. Can anyone help me pick out some good markings for the armor? I've looked around briefly but I'm trying not to spend as long as it took painting them (Actually turning into much longer at this point) learning the entire space pups history trying to figure out what markings should be on these 20ish guys xD Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive found some pictures of what might work but I don't know what is and isn't appropriate and would like to do a good job for the customer (Who is just starting the game and doesn't know much about the army either, just liked them a lot)

For reference its a:
Captain
2x Lieutenants
1x Standard Bearer (Any tips on a good standard layout would be awesome too)
10x Intercessors? (Basic Infantry Guys)
5x Hellblasters (Special Weapons guys)
3x Inceptors (Orbital Heavy Weapons teams?)

What Great Company are they?
Space Wolves have a Great Company symbol on one shoulder, and a pack mark on the other. Often they also have the symbol on one of their knee pads. See one of the Space Wolves codices for details and for pictures of the standards that they use. Also, Space Wolves are fond of runes, so if you can freehand those that'd make them look great.

From the pictures in White Dwarf, it seems that the Primaris SW follow the same standards as ordinary Space Wolves.
However, we don't exactly know yet how Primaris fit into the SW organisation. Therefore, until more details come out I would regard the captain as wolf lord, lieutenants and standard bearer as wolf guard, intercessors as grey hunters, hellblasters as grey fangs and inceptors as skyclaws. That is how I would paint them.

So clarification, what kind of symbols would a Wold Lord fall under? The Space Wolves Marking page I found in an old codex lists

Wolf Scouts
Blood Claws
Grey Hunters
Long Fangs
Wolf Guard

And lists twelve great companies I think

I really do love the celtic stuff that they have in the HH Inferno book and want to try to work some of that in as well though I'm not sure where yet, perhaps one of the knee pads? So Right shoulder is their pack marking and left shoulder should be great company from what I'm seeing? Any chance you could give me a quick run down of the significance or likelihood of primaris falling into one or the other great companies? Morkai's looks interesting, Egil looks like the basic one (Ragnar and grimnar are the main guys Im guessing?)

Grimnar is the Great Wolf (Chapter Master), so he is the main one.
Ragnar Blackmane's company is the one that features in the art and on the GW site the most. Both already have an established Wolf Lord (Captain), so you might not want to go with those.
I'd pick one of the lesser known companies that do not have an established model for their leader.
Though on the other hand, going with Grimnar's great company is also never wrong of course. Then Captain could just be a Wolf Guard battle leader in the fluff. I would definitely do this if your client wants to pick up character models in the future, as most of those belong to Grimnar's company and if the Primaris are painted to match they fit in nicely.

Also, with 8th edition, there has been a jump forward in time. As the new SW codex has not yet been released, I have no idea as to the status of each company and its lord. I guess that means Primaris could fit in everywhere equally.

I am really a fan of the HH SW as well. You can get some celtic motifs pretty much everywhere you want. SW aren't exactly fond of standardisation.

Wolf Lords use Wolf Guard markings, as they are promoted from the ranks of the Wolf Guard.

Didn't a space wolf company leader died recently? yeah, looks like the great company of Egli iron wolf was decapitated. (hell the entire great company was proably destroyed) so that strikes me as a good great company to use.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

For what it's worth, the 8th edition painting guide shows Primaris Space Wolves as follows: Battleline (intercessors): Grey Hunter markings. Hellblasters (Fire support): Long Fang markings. Inceptors (close support): Blood Claw markings. Officers: Wolf Guard markings. The example shows them with Ragnar's Blackmane company symbol.

Ultramarines Reivers have Assault Squad markings, so Space Wolves Reivers would probably have Blood Claw markings, but I could also see Scout markings (black on Chapter grey).

Going back to 1st and 2nd edition, Grey Hunter, Blood Claw and Long Fang squad leaders and 2iCs had a symbol on their right shoulder (yellow for Grey Hunters, black for Blood Claws, red for Long Fangs), but that's been retconned away. It also used to be the case that each Great Company's Wolf Guard had a different patter of yellow and black, but again, it seems that now the Blackmane, Deathwolf and Sun Wolf Great Companies all use the same pattern.

As for Wolf Lords, they seem to do their own thing. Logan Grimnar has his Great Company symbol on his right shoulder and a Crux Terminatus on the left, like any other Terminator. Ragnar Blackmane appears to have a reversed version of his company symbol on the left shoulder (gold wolf head on black) and a black shoulder pad on the right, covered by the wolf pelt. Krom Dragongaze also has his right shoulder covered by a wolf pelt. The un-named Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf on the GW site has Wolf Guard pack markings on his right shoulder, but they're mostly covered by a cloak. It looks like that model is actually Harald Deathwolf, is that right shoulder pad is anything to go by.

Most Space Wolf Primaris Marines got shipped off as the Wolves' successor chapter - the horribly named "Wolf Spear" so in all honesty you can be pretty creative with SW Primaris Marines and only have them loosely connected with the original SW heraldry.

PS your taste in chapters stinks.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.
