Does anyone else feel like GW missed a trick with the upcoming space marine combat Doctrines and chapter tactics? They seem to be going back to the old style chapter tactics when they could have ultised the new CPs more. Having said that however, I'm still not entirely 100% sure what it'll look like in the end.

I don't really know how best to approach chapter tactics at the moment, but I came up with this idea last night for combat Doctrines. Space Marine armies have the following Doctrines, each one costing 1CP which is immediately declared and spent before the <chapter> unit acts. They are:

Advance and shoot in the same turn
Advance and charge in the same turn
Retreat and shoot in the same turn
Retreat and charge in the same turn.
Reroll all to hit rolls of 1
Reroll all to wound rolls of 1

Sorry I haven't got names for them yet.

So they're a little bit like IG orders, except they don't require an officer or anything like that. You just spend a cp and the unit automatically does it. It is based on the old space marine detachments like the Gladius Strike Force which did give you extra Doctrines, except now you don't have free razorbacks running around. Oh, and personally I think these Doctrines should be open to all chapter units, including vehicles.

One other suggestion, using this system could open up the opportunity to rework the captain. What if the captains rites of war ability was changed to 'select one <chapter> unit within 18". That unit immediately carries out a combat doctrine ability'.

I think most of the time, you'll have at most the chance to carry out three of these per game, assuming you don't do anything else CP related. Since it's a finite resource too, I think it would be pretty balanced too. What do you guys think?
