Apologies if this is not entirely relevant in this section, I'm returning to WH40k after a long absence, and I can't get my head around the detachment rules in 8th.

So basic question, if I want a battle-forged detachment of, for example, mainly IG but want to pad them out with, for example, terminators- since they all have the -imperium- faction keyword can they all fit in the same detachment? Or does a detachment require that all units share all the same faction key words?

Thanks in advance

No, they only must share a SINGLE faction keyword to be a legal detachment, with the added rider that in matched play ALL detachments must share at least one keyword. You can mix any Imperium units within the same detachment or same battleforged army. You can mix Lemon Rusks with Spess Mahrines all you want.

For example, you can take a detachment of Tyranids (where all units have TYRANID) and a detachment of Eldar (Where all units have Aeldariā„¢Ā®OCPleaseDoNotSteal) in the same battleforged army if you are not using the matched play rules, but if you want to use the matched play rules (which most players do use since that's what makes the game most balanced) you have to have all detachments having at least one keyword in common.

That being said, in the future codexes you'll most likely be rewarded for having all detachments share a different, non-IMPERIUM keyword (I think the upcoming Chapter Tactics requires all units to share a <Chapter> to activate the benefit).

That's fantastic news, thank you very much.

It's confusing when the IA index for the guard has Death Korps being limited to certain vehicles etc- I assumed that meant a DK detachment had to be all DK with specific limits to vehicles. I am now assuming that these "DK vehicles" just basically benefit from things like orders that will only effect limited units in the same detachment.

Yeah you got that right, all that means is that only those vehicles may have the Death Korps of Kreig <Regiment> keyword, the same way that the Space Wolf entry in Index Imperium 1 restricts what may have the Space Wolf <Chapter> tag. For example, you cannot have a Tactical Squad from the <Space Wolves> chapter, and you cannot have a Conscripts or Tank Commander unit that has the Death Korps of Kreig <Regiment> keyword.

Ah that's starting to sink in now, cheers.

It really opens up a hell of a lot of options for Imperium players, I'm impressed

Yeah, its pretty good. See also all Genestealer cult units having the Tyranid faction keyword so they can mix too. As the previous post states, i beieive the chapter tactics and equivalents for other races will be to reward players for not taking advantage of a much more flexible army creation system.
