Fresh off of the Hawk Wargames facebook page, announcement of the second edition of Dropzone Commander

Hawk Wargames is excited to announce Dropzone Commander: 2nd Edition!

The current Dropzone Commander system is highly regarded and we are working on bringing you a new edition that retains its excellent core mechanics whilst improving many aspects to reflect warfare in the 27th Century.

We are in the stages of alpha testing the proposed changes and a closed beta will also take place with our Hawk Talon scheme. We expect a release in Q4 2017 with a release date announced closer to the time.

2nd Edition will bring balance to existing units and enhance a player's collection, not invalidate it. We want every unit to be playable. New units are in development which will be previewed over the next few months.

Beasts of War have interviewed Dave and they will have a video for you on Monday with more details including proposed changes and even more new artwork, including this incredible Archangel squadron!

Make sure to spread the news by sharing this post and let us know in the comments what you're looking forward to in the new edition.

Really hope this brings a new starter set, the old one is fantastic but I feel like just bunging 2 boxes you can buy separately and the card scenery you can buy separately can be improved upon

One of our groups favorite games. Really great system. Been on the back burner from other new games and it got kind of stale with current units as new ones were just better then old. This will defiantly get us playing it again!

Interesting system and some fantastic art / models.

Will wait and see how much errata there is off the bat.

Slightly odd cover for a mainly ground based game...yes there are aircraft and dropships but its mostly at very low level and on the ground.

I always wanted to get into this game but just never did. I still have a PHR starter set in a KR multi case from the initial release, with a nice layer of dust on top. Guess now is a good time to try and sell it

OK, officially intrigued. Always loved the models, found the rules a bit in need of tweaking. Exciting news!

Would be nice to see a new faction, as they mentioned one for Dropfleet.

Also a focus on non urban would be good. I love the theme, but fighting in a city over and over gets old, but non urban stuff seemed to be lacking

Just FYI, Hawk confirmed this will not be the cover for V2. They chose this artwork for the announcement because it looked cool and they were doing some work to make fast movers more exciting.

This is one of those games where I wonder how well it would translate to 28mm if they ever went that route. They have a solid universe, cool units, good fluff behind them - an interesting aesthetic, etc.

Their plastic kits seem pretty high quality.

That's interesting. I wonder if Phase 1 and 2 will be integrated into the 2.0 rulebook.

Game would be very expensive at 28M. That's a lot of vehicles and those larger dropships would be huge kits in order to hold 6,9 tanks the size of a Leman Russ (assuming Hawk stuck to their rule of you can actually fit it on there if you want to.)

Which is why it would be adapted to be more infantry focused than vehicle focused. Sort of like GoA / Bolt Action / 3rd - 4th ed 40k.

Oh sick i like this game

id love to see DZC go more infinity style small squads going in ruined office buildings looking for that data. if going 28mm scale (although actually i think it would be better to go HO scale just for lazy train hobby terrain)

the aesthetics are neeto.

I'm bloody tired of 28mm. The scale of 10mm works much better IMO.

From my understanding:

Phase 1 and Phase 2 are not being rolled in, there was talk of errata PDFs to bring them up to speed for ver 2 rules.

They've also said in the past that there are no plans for a third game at this point, they just aren't large enough to support it.

Hopefully the focus of the game will move away from building demolition as well as give infantry something to do other than cowering in buildings searching for objectives.

I like DZC but there are some definite issues with it. 2.0 would also be a good time to introduce the 6th 'race'.

I've always liked the infantry being exceptionally squishy, felt a bit more realistic than most games

I'm very excited. The game is a solid game, but there were changes that needed to happen as the game changed over time.

A 2nd edition is exactly what I hoped for.

If they bring out new plastics, I'm in.

Also, I love the backstory advancement, so I'll probably buy the new book just for the additional fluff. A new faction would really be exciting.

Yeah, for sure Shrapnel.

I'm a little torn on this - I went in pretty heavily on Dropfleet, and nerdfest is painting up my PHR for it and I've got a local group that plays.

But my friends who played DzC and I all burned out on it... it just didn't seem to work like we'd hoped once we got really into the game. I'll definitely look at this new edition, but likely will buy the rulebook first to read and see if it's really going to fix the issues we encountered.

I do wish them all the best, as they are a cool company that makes even cooler models! And they've only gotten better at it over time

I like it as well and Hawk have been introducing more 'dynamic' infantry with a more varied role than simply scrabbling around for objectives while being killed by falling masonry but I would still like them to have a more significant role. Reducing the deadliness of falling masonry and/or making some terrain (such as woods) 'indestructible' would be high on my wish list.

I like the game but I strongly dislike the emphasis on blowing up buildings. '

I've always loved the models for this game, sadly the one club this gets played locally meets on a night I work so I can't attend. Hopefully the new edition will help get more people playing.

I agree that blowing up buildings was a go to strategy for denying an objective to your opponent, there needs to be a bit more of a penalty for doing it.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

Beasts of War vid, it's 40 minutes so I'll give some quick highlights:

*Fast Movers are not bought as a battlegroup, you now buy attack runs instead. They can make a fast pass (like current rules), or make a "slow" pass where they are on the board for two turns, and can make a turn (no longer need to move straight the entire time) and are easier to hit. While you only have to buy the attack run, if your opponent shoots it down it's worth a lot of kill points (Athenas were mentioned as being 300). However, if it is shotdown, you don't lose further attack runs.

Army construction will be simplified, but they aren't looking at invalidating current army lists.

Also there's some confusion, but they are looking at a change at how dropships work. At one point it sounded like they will work similar to Shaltari gates (you choose to activate them with a battlegroup) and at another it sounded like you can retask a dropship that lost its squad.

Rebalancing units: Specifically calling out the Taranis, but he wants to have every unit have its place on the table (depending on your strategy).

New Command Decks: 56 cards, before the game begins you remove 16 of them. Current plan is in tournaments you show the removed 16 cards to your opponent.

New units coming with with the new book. Currently no new infantry but a mix of everything else.

Simplifying army construction would be great! The current version is a bit needlessly restricting, too, I think.
