Hey guys!
Not sure if im in the right place, so apologies if im not, however I've just started collecting/playing 40k again after a 12 year hiatus....

Now a few of these questions may sound stupid, (stoopid is as stoopid does), but I've opted for a nurgle based CSM army, and....im lost.

As you can imagine, 12 years later and ive forgotten army composition, points etc. I'm going for a fully death guard based army, with Typhus and Mortarion joining the ranks later this year.
I don't want any daemons, just a nice mix of the new deathguard/pox walkers/ foetid bloat drones, with the classic CSM's with a deathguard paint job.

Can someone please give me a breakdown/step by step of making an army? that'd be ace after much googling and no avail...

Thank you in advance...

Start with your troop detachment (Battalion) pick a HQ and 3 troop units (plague marines or pox walkers)

Then I'd suggest a fast attack detachment (Outrider) pick a HQ and take 3 foetid bloat drones.

Then add HS or Elites to your Battalion detachment; blightbringer or predator maybe.

That should get you statted. Is a 7CP list.

That, my friend, is extremely helpful.

Thank you for that. Am I right in saying that a battalion detachment can have 1-3 HQ choices?

Yep that's right. I'm guessing that you have the Chaos Index, but do you have the rulebook too? There's a whole section on making an army and the different detachments that you can run as well.

If you look at the contents of Dark Imperium, it's basically got three HQ choices, two Troops, and a Fast Attack. If you add in a unit of Plague Marines you've fundamentally got a full army for the Batallion detachment's basic requirements, and plenty of space to add things on. If you're still waiting on getting bits though, you can play with power levels rather than points, which I believe you can use without having to have an 'organised' force by the force organisation chart rules.

Thanks guys, this is really helpful.

I'm just getting my head round the compositions and key words etc.

Just realised that according to the index normal CSM cannot have the Legion keyword "Deathguard" as its not included in the deathguard list so will probably end up not using the CSM squad I picked up....

I do have the rule book from the dark imperium (me and a friend went halves for 2 boxes of Dark Imperium so we had double the contents as well)

Any more advice is very very welcome.

Ah yeah, that's how I am with my ten chaos terminators that I own. A death guard army can take units that don't have the death guard keyword, but you wont receive the benefits.

It's weird having terminators at T4 without any deathguard rules and Disgustingly Resilient. Hopefully the new book coming out will have a version of them that's viable for DG
