Howdy Y'all,

Was looking through P&M and I couldn't find a thread asking this question (there is a showcase, but not what I was looking for), so the newbie's gotten up the courage to ask.

I got the Dark Imperium box set recently, and I've already set to painting the Death Guard as the Pallid Hand, seen below:

So I'm painting the Primaris Marines in a darker or more vibrant color for contrast, and am currently looking at painting my dudes in the scheme of the United States Marine Corps Dress Blues, pictured here:

My goal isn't to keep the exact ensemble, just maintain the color scheme: dark blue (yes, modern pictures have the blouse look black, but the official listing is midnight blue, and the official is the official), red, gold white, and (possibly) light blue. Current idea is to have the darker blue as the main component of the power armor, with white hand/gauntlets, gold aquila and pauldron trims, red pauldrons, and a white helmet w/ the face itself a darker blue (or vice-versa).

Basically, I'm asking how I should go about this. The Crimson Fists have a similar color to the Dress Blue pants and could work as a base, but I'm looking for a darker color first. I'm open to suggestions/critiques as to choices on the color scheme, my proposed scheme, and paints I'll need.

Thanks if anyone replies, y'all.

For a darker color, I would look at the color you want for the pants, then look for a color like that in the Base paints range, then look for a darker color. Darker + base type paint is a good foundation.

I feel your scheme might be overdone, pauldrons and face sound like a bit much; KISS, etc.
Here's an idea I scraped up by copy pasting the color codes into the space marine painter:
http://www.hqmc.marines.mil/Portals/134/Docs/CCM%20Docs/MCRC/MC%20Brand%20Guide/USMC_brand_guide2009.pdf

(pretend the red kneepad is blue with a red stripe)

I have a pot of P3 Exile blue which is pretty nice, and Vallejo has a good selection available. However monitor colors are deceiving, so ideally you should visit a store and check out the paints in person to get a better idea of what will work best for you.

I went over to Bolter & Chainsword and yeah, my scheme was way too busy. Was trying to copy the Mortifactor helmet style, but my scheme was way more than bichromatic. Unfortunately, it looks like your B&S SMP image isn't popping up -maybe cross-compatibility issues with dakka? If you could find an alternate way to post the image or just layout what colors went where, I'd be thankful, but I think I can manage with some experimentation.

Unfortunately, hobby stores in my area are few and far between, but I get your meaning (RGB vs. CMYK vs. IRL). Vallejo has a Midnight Blue that matches the word-for-word the Marine Corps listing, so I'll be on the look for that.

Thanks for replying though, gent.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind, mate. Thanks.

Hopefully this works

Red knee is a placeholder for a stripe on the kneepad or greave. Wasn't sure at first about the hands, but combined with the helmet it seems to help keep the Crimson Fists and Ultramarines 3rd at bay.
