Does adding an assassin detachment to my IG battalion break its battle forged status? The wording makes it seem like as long as they share the Imperium key word they remain a part of the same detachment, but says nothing about it breaking battle forged.

Running into lots of rules lawyer situations this edition.

I think it's BF as long as it's built with detachments an can only be in detachments if they share a keyword.

As long as they share a faction keyword and don't break the requirements of the detachment then your army is battleforged.

You have 2 very different issues involved:
1) each detachment must have all models shate at least 1 faction keyword(or be unaligned)

2)then in matched play all units in all detachments must share a faction keyword(or be unaligned)

In any imperium army(matched all imperium, or otherwise just an imperium detachment); you may include assassins.

Your list as stated is battleforged under both guidelines.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

If you add assassins to an existing detachment with an HQ and yadda yadda... You're fine

If you add assassins to an "assassins" detachment with only assassins and zero HQ, and it's not an aux detachment... then yea you're breaking battleforged.

Basically
Here is how you should read the 2 Imperium Books
There is no Imperial Guard, or Assassins, or Space Marines, or Grey Knights

There is 1 VAST SUPER Army called "Imperium"
Absolutely EVERYTHING in that Vast Army can be brought legally in a Detachment.

6+ = 6/36 | Reroll 1s = 7/36 | Reroll Misses = 11/36 ||||||| 5+ = 12/36 | Reroll 1s 14/36 | Reroll Misses = 20/36 ||||||| 4+ = 18/36 | Reroll 1s 21/36 | Reroll Misses = 27/36
3+ = 24/36 | Reroll 1s 28/36 | Reroll Misses = 32/36 ||||||| 2+ = 30/36 | Reroll 1s 35/36 ||||||| Highest of 2d6 = 4.47

You can add Assassins to any IMPERIUM detachment

Ok thanks for the replies, I was thinking this was the case but I had two people tell me I wasn't battle forged for bringing a vindicare.

Note that besides the above, there may be additional requirements on the composition of the detachment to be eligible for a faction buff.

"If you have a battle-forged army, units only receive the bonus if every model in their Detachment has this ability".

The Index version of Mechanicus Canticles for example requires that each unit in the detachment has the canticles special rule - otherwise no buff.

However, you are in luck, the AM Orders on the other hand have no such requirement, so you are free to sprinkle other Imperium units into your detachment, they are just not eligible to receive orders.

The best thing to do in that case is ask them why it isn't bf according to those people

So basically you can take a GK HQ, a SW, HQ, and a Ultramarines HQ, mix max whatever troop choices and other detachment slots you can fit, and still be battle forged?

Does every unit in the detachment share a keyword? If so the army is battleforged.

If you're playing matched play, replace the above question with "Does every unit in your army share a keyword?"

Interesting... Surprised people aren't trying to break the gak out of imperium keywords.

They are. Knights+Conscripts is a thing, as well as GoodStuff.dec

The way 8th is going to work is not to punish you for taking a grab-bag army, but to reward you for not. The SM codex has bonuses if you restrict yourself to only <Chapter> units which you lose if you take any non <Chapter> units.

Yes I was hoping to see this get broken up somehow with the release of codexes.

Not to mention Celestine + 1 Unit of Sisters is an insanely common sight

As others have mentioned, GW is allowing you to take nearly anything you want, but rewarding taking the types of armies they want to see. So far we have seen:
1) More CP for taking broader options (0 CP for Patrol versus 9 CP for a Brigade)
2) Aura's and other Character Options that have limited usability based on model faction keywords
3) Bonus abilities based on restricting options in detachments (Space Marine Chapter Tactics and Stratagems)
4) More CP Use Options, making CP more attractive (see 1 above)

As BaconCatBug said, rewards not punishment.
