Can anybody recommend a cheaper, equally or more suitable, alternative to the citadel knife? Preferably available for UK shipping from Amazon.

Get a hobby knife from Fiskars. Damn near everything Fiskar's makes is gold, reliable and hugely cost efficient. Hell I picked one up as an add-on from Prime the other day for $3.50.

Here it is in the US:

https://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-Heavy-Craft-Knife-167110-1001/dp/B001A42CTW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501087957&sr=8-1&keywords=fiskars+hobby+knife

EDIT: Also the standard by which all others are judged, the original X-Acto knife is also available for $3-4 bucks.

PS: Holy f-ing gak, lol, the GW X-acto copy (it may actually be an X-Acto coloured for GW) is friggin' $32!? in the US...wow...yeah, skip that garbage.

Really liking the cheap 1.50$ japanese exacto blade from daiso

dunno if its in the UK

Otherwise any x-acto works just fine and is far cheaper than GW stuff.

GW hobby tools are all over priced "Branded" gear.

Thanks.

I've got the clippers from GW and they're a little disappointing.

Yeah dont try and cut paper clips with it

the metal is non hardened. its pretty garbage.

even 3$ harbor freight flush cutters work better.

Yeah clippers are tough - you need to be aware if they're stated to be "hobby clippers" they're less likely to cut through anything hardened. My Xuron clippers are great but I keep them to plastic and soft metals (plasticard/wood, etc. also). I don't try to do brass piping or paperclips with them.

you can't go wrong with one of these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Swann-Morton-Premium-Retractaway-Handle/dp/B016WDV9DU/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1501104928&sr=8-10&keywords=swann+morton+handle

for clippers, these are expensive but so so good:

The GW knife isn't an xacto copy, it's a Swann Morton copy. It's still overpriced, but you have to compare it to a a Swann Morton rather than an xacto.

GW does paint(in the pots) well, and plastic well. Other than that, look elswhere for your supplies. That includes sprays, glues, flock, ect. I guess the plastic cityscape bases they put out are a good deal though. Like 30 of the things in a box.

Edit: By "plastic," I mean models.

Those plastic city bases gw makes are cash money

the paints..... its hit or miss like any other paint company but i dont like them only because they have changed their formulas a few times and i cannot forgive them for killing off the BEST color in existence charadon granite.

I'd rather just get Vallejo because I can't stand pots, but the metallics do seem a bit nicer, and that one wash I don't remember buying is pretty nice.

Get an x-acto knife. You can never really go wrong with one. Basic, simple, easy to replace blades and is cheap.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.

I found that with x-acto knives, the collet loosened & the blades then slipped. Much prefer the Swann Morton system.
Warning though - when you're tired don't try pushing a new blade on with a pair of pliers (in fear of slicing my fingers). The only thing that stopped the blade going through my finger when the pliers inevitably slipped was my finger bone! Managed to severe the nerve :(

The only problem with most GW stuff is the price. Most of it priced as if it were top of the line, but it's actually only average or slightly above average.

I've never been unhappy with any GW sprays I've bought, it's just expensive. The GW clippers I have a pretty good, better than your average hardware store variety, but still overpriced when you consider they aren't any better than Xuron clippers which can be found a lot cheaper. The knife is also above your average xacto simply because it's a Swann Morton design with Swann Morton blades.... of course you could just buy a Swann Morton knife straight up.

Basically the GW stuff is usually good if not above average*** if you close your eyes and don't read the price.

***The exception being their glues where they had a bad run, I don't know if they fixed their glue woes but these days I just recommend people stay away from them and stick to the old faithfuls from Testors, Revell, Tamiya and Loctite who have been making reliable products for decades.
