So, apparently there was mention at San Diego Comic Con that there would be a "sort of" series called Stargate Origins. It's digital only and seems to be like those webisodes that Galactica had back when it was between seasons. It is important to say that this is NOT the Stargate movie reboot that was being thrown around a couple of years ago. That project is dead and buried deeper than King Tut was. :(

More info in the YouTube clip.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

This is an immediate, hard, angry pass from me based solely on the fact it gaks all over one of the most moving episodes of TV ever(IMO, obviously).

Ernest goddamn Littlefield was the only person to step through the gate before Jackson and Carter got it functional in the 90's. Period. If you change that, you rob The Torment of Tantalus of so much of its impact, and Langford ends up looking insincere and disingenuous.

Seriously what is it with these people, they can't just leave something the hell alone for fans to enjoy, they can't just make the shows fans want to see, they have to keep going back with prequels that retcon stuff or create new inconsistencies, and most of them end up being rubbish anyway, or trying to force established franchises to undergo huge tonal shifts to suit their own whims & preferences. Bog off and make your own stories in a new IP you hacks.

And I know that's a bit ranty.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

It's not too ranty. There is so much great sci fi literature to adapt, so many ideas to explore, that such hijackings of established series are unnecessary.

That said, I could go along with a complete reboot of Stargate to its core elements: science, ancient aliens, academics trying to find their place in a military project. But it would have to be a hard reboot where characters and series continuity came in; don't give us "Jaffa" and then make them have blue headcrests and lay eggs.

Oh god Stargate Infinity. I forgot that show got made. I hadn't watched the movie or SG-1 up to that point and even as a kid I thought it was bad. Of course as a kid I gauged the quality of all tv shows by how cool the toys were

Oh right should probably comment on the web-series. Eh. I don't really care. I think I enjoyed SG-1 so much that the only possible thing they could make at this point is a proper continuation but I mean, what continuation is there to be done that wouldn't be a complete tonal shift? By the end of SG-1, humanity have become the inheritors of the Asgard and by the end of Atlantis we have an Ancient super city parked off the coast of California, the Gould are dead, the Ori have been dealt with, and what else is there to really do? We've basically been made the new masters of the known universe. Were the Replicators defeated? I can't remember. I feel like any attempt to continue the series would just be retreading tired ground cause Star Gate was one of the few shows that actually went on long enough to tie up its initial plot threads, invent new boringer plot threads, and then tie those up to before going out the door.

Also SG-U was bad and I think we're all just better off pretending it never happened

The Replicators were defeated. The main threat left that was introduced shortly before Atlantis was canceled were a group of rogue Asgard. Very little was shown about them that I recall other than they have some extra bad assed tech and man sized power armor.

That sounds kind of cool, but it also sounds like something more suited to TV specials than new series to me. I wouldn't mind a sort of "day in the life" episode about what's going on on Atlantis now that its on Earth myself, but I just don't see a way to make a whole series out of it.

I suppose there's scope for "Stargate: Hubris (in the ancient Greek sense of challenging the gods); Now that Humanity has taken over the mantle of the Goua'uld and Asgard, will we make the same mistakes and present ourselves as gods?

But I can't think of anything more than that, so I'll leave it alone and go and watch the original film again. I kinda preferred that to all the spin-offs, for some reason.

I think a bigger question is how the feth do you hide an ancient super city parked off the coast of California

Even if it stays invisible, you'd think it would have an obvious effect on international sea lanes, wild life, ocean patterns, whatever, that would eventually lead someone to inadvertently noticing 'something' was there.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Stargate remains one of my fav series of all time. The Stargate itself is an inherent story-telling mechanism that is limited only by your imagination.

So why go backwards? Why do a prequel for a character who's arc was small, pivotal, but most importantly finished. What more is there to say about the Stargate program pre the first Abydos mission?

We know what happened. One man went through, it shut off behind him, and they didn't test it again 'til the 90's.

Move forward. Expand. Don't contract.

I agree with it all

drop this stinky hot mess of an idea

if you really want to do a different stargate with retcons and other nonsense why not make use of the alternate universes that pop up in a number of the shows

I've actually been rewatching SG1 on Hulu and damn. I hadn't realized before how many episodes from the series I thought were really good. A much higher number than any of the Star Trek series' save DS9 I think. I've only skipped about 5-6 episodes a season so far and I'm getting into season 4 now.

Stargate has several timelines - even the main one was chnaged a bit as we got fish in jacks lake - and he went with "close enough"

Loved SG1 - the rest were very pale shadows especially the last series - that was truely awful
