I'm going to paint a Salamanders Lieutenant but I am somewhat confused on the markings. Do Salamanders paint the white and red stripes on their helmets? Do they use the skull with red halo on their shoulder pad or is that just an Ultramarines thing? Googling around seems to suggest the skull and halo is an Ultramarines marking but the helmet stripes seem to differ chapter by chapter with some omitting them entirely.

Salamanders player and fan here, I'll chime in.
They don't use tactical markings from what I know, so anything on the right shoulder should usually be left off.
And a quick search shows black helmets, stripes, gold and all sorts. I think a black, white or striped helmet would look really cool. Fluffy or not.

The only Salamanders Lieutenant I can see in the Codex is painted the same as the other Salamanders.

This. Salamanders are pretty uniform in terms of markings. Some gold and white occasionally but pretty much this. ^^
But they're your models and you can paint any markings you'd like. I like the idea of fancy markings.

Thank you! I like to be as fluff-accurate with my models/paint jobs as I can be. I think I'll just paint him slightly more fancy than the marines to make him more easy to identify on the table top.

Personally I'm a fan of the old first edition rank emblems. 'By the book' they were originally supposed to go on the shoulder and latterly on the forearm and helmet, but there was a Captain in the 1st edition Medic article who had it on his thigh.
