Hi, dakka. I'm interested in getting a gaming laptop for WoW and Skyrim. I am more interested in performance and fast loading times, instead of max graphics on ultra settings. I simply don't have room for a desktop, and I need to buy a new laptop anyway to have at my hobby store at work. Below are some notes on what I need, and any tips are appreciated.

-Fast swapping from games in progress to multiple open browser tabs and other programs
-Fast loading times between areas/instances in game
-Fast startup from sleep/off
-15 or 16" screen is sufficient for my needs

I know I will be making some graphics concessions by choosing a laptop, but I feel that I need something a step above an HP Envy or something like that and like I said I need a laptop anyway.

Thanks again for any help- I've done some research and the only thing I can really understand so far that I want is SSD. and not HDD since I don't intend on storing much data.

Then you want something with an SSD. A computer with a solid state drive is so much faster than one with a traditional hard drive. Boot times, load times and installation times are much quicker with one.

I have been VERY happy with the MSI i bought from Newegg.

I did not get the SSD, but there is room for ine should I want it.

And they have excellent prices.

I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends.

Three!! Three successful trades! Ah ah ah!

Without a price range its pretty hard to suggest a model. Types of games would help too.

As above though, I've had an MSI for two years now with no issues. MSI offers a pretty wide range of gaming laptops, from big beefy performance oriented gaming laptops, to super slim and lightweight laptops with impressive specs (but overheat easier), to a models that sit somewhere in between.

You can get a pretty solid laptop for under 2k (CAD, probably cheaper in USD). Really depends on what you're using it for and how you're using it. I use mine a portable workstation, so it only needs to be mobile enough to fit in a large backpack, while other people I know move theirs around a lot and consequently got a less performance, but much lighter and smaller laptop.

Thanks for the help and tips, guys.

I am not interested in spending over 1000 USD on a laptop, not including shipping.

Like I said before, I am aware that this will cost me some graphics and performance but WoW and multiple programs is the max I am would be doing, really. I just want the speed and multitasking.

If you're content with playing 2-year old games (which is both great and cheap) any new laptop will do.

I upgraded my laptop so that it could run TW:Warhammer when it was released and it's still running great, but then again I get most of my games at the Steam offers, humble bundles and so on. War Thunder, Skyrim, X-COM, TW series, Rocket League..... they will all run smooth on a 500€ laptop bought today.

I even have DOSbox in there to get a bit of old school action (currently in the middle of my nth run of Ultima VII)
