I came up with an army concept that interests me as a new project; The general idea is Mermaids (or Sirens) in spess Space. However, I'm not sure which faction to use.

My first choice for factions is Sisters of Battle. The reason for this is twofold; I have the index and their already a female-oriented faction. However, I'm not sure about how the fluff might support the idea; It's a simple concept, but It may fit better as a Xenos race. I want to make this army as fluffy as I can, which means not just making up new races per se, So that is not preferred. I was hoping someone around here could help me decide which faction is most likely to support 'sirens in space' in a interesting fashion.

The general style for modelling purposes would use a very water-based theme; Victorian steampunk, the basing material would be that of a sea shore, heavy armor might use elements of old-fashioned deep sea diving suits. Somehow, the units would have either fins or wings, or maybe a mixture of both, fins on some wings on others.

Would their be a better choice then Sisters for this army?

Somewhere.

I'm not hugely familiar with 8th Edition, so I can only be of limited help, but I would focus on those Armies that have the ability to force movement and control from the enemy. Like the good 'ole Lash of Submission Psyker power, which I don't think really exists now.

As to which army that would be, my guess would be Slaneesh or Eldar...but I don't know much about either,

The rules don't really have gender to them so you can look elsewhere for a better rule fit if something fits better.

That said, there does exist both mind-controlling spells in the game as well as sonic weaponry. However both are carried by space marines, which I doubt you'll find to be very mermaid-esque. However sonic weaponry manifests in game rules as things that ignore cover (the one rule it consistently had over the editions) so Sisters of Battle armed with flamers make for a good approximation of sonic weaponry.

Another option is Craftworld eldar; the Howling Banshees would be great at mimicking the screams of sirens (so instead of blasting their eardrums, maybe it's causing them to get horny?). Farseers and Warlocks can also cast a variety of buffs and debuffs that can be thought of as muddling the minds of your enemies.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.

Seems like Dark Eldar, Harlequin based Ynarri would fit well.

Ynnari with Dark Eldar Ld debuffs and Howling Banshees would be a cool fit you could even fluff them as a Siren-themed Corsair band.

If you wanted more steampunky, then regular human pirates would work nicely. I've seen some kickass voidborn conversions with DEldar bits

Oh, and I've come up with a semi-expanded Shadow War idea and need some feedback! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/726439.page

Awesome ideas, all. I didn't know about the Dark Eldar Leadership debuff, I will definitely look into Eldar! Thank you guys for helping me out.

Mainly I considered already being female oriented as a plus for kit-bashing purposes. The Idea is still early, but I like to use bits mostly from the faction which the army comes from.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Fishmen codex confirmed?

But on a more serious note, Slaanesh Daemons/Slaanesh CSM seems like the best option for a Mermaid faction since warp mutation can explain their fishy bottoms. Also, you could end up with a Mermaid Primarch down the line:

Like others have said, the concept seems to mesh best with the Slaanesh part of the Daemon army list.

As others have said. Slaaneshi daemons or an eldar faction.

Alternatively, you could have some heretical fun with ork freebooterz

Chaos undivided: 8300, Tau empire: 5600, Ork speed freaks: 1750

You could do like a tyranid list.

Have all the sirens be the synapse creatures.

Have the others be hypnotised followers.

There are enough space monsters in 40K to justefy a minor faction of this.

Good luck modeling though. I think it takes long enough just to paint.

Not a bad plan! I already have the index and everything. The only thing is that their are fewer tyranid bits I would use, but if I'm organized in my approach that shouldn't be a problem.

Enslavers would make sense but there are no rules for them.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.
