So a few years back I had a couple of WFB armies, both themed and one of them was Night Goblins with trolls and giants. Didn't get into AoS but I'm reading an article on the forthcoming rules update and I'm understanding from it that whilst you can still take literally any models you want, there's also army selection criteria based on Grand Alliance and Allegiance. What's all this mean? Is it bonuses for selecting a themed army, and if so, what? I've read the free rules and I'm wanting to get an idea if the advanced stuff is something I'll want to buy and then reorganise my collection to play.

As it stands now, for a Pitched Battle game there are army building requirements. For example, at 1,500 points:

1-6 Leaders
3+ Battleline
0-4 Behemoths
0-4 Artillery

Some things become Battleline if your army is themed, or matched. Using the GHB2 example: if all your army was Moonclan, Cave Squigs & Squig Hoppers become Battleline.

Aha. So, if I wanted to take those units as Battleline in such a game, I'd also have to spend no more than 400p on my trolls and giants?

Huh. I'd meet the battleline requirements with my stikkaz and stabbaz alone. Is there any other bonus for taking a Moonclan?

Not currently. Though mind you, squig hoppers ARE strong. If you were to pick, say, Ironjawz, you'd get access to a series of abilities, traits and relics different from the generic ones you get per alliance. Currently only battletome armies and 16 armies from the new GHB will have those, though.
