I've been working with a sculptor and caster on a new ship inspired by things like the Super Star Destroyer, the old Space Fleet Battleships, the Neal Stephenson novel Aristoli, and all sorts of flying palaces.

Working name is the Athena-Class Carrier.

The idea being a battleship that's mostly protected by multiple redundant force fields making armor much less necessary so it can be more of a flying palace.

The wings and broadsides are modular, they can be built with wings (really launch bays), cannons or turrets. Similarly the towers can be swapped for statues or turrets.

Thoughts?

(and more importantly for the company that may cast them, is this something you'd buy?)

And some older renders showing the modularity. I'm not too happy with how it looks without the wings but being able to swap the wings out is essential to another project that's coming...

I quite like it and I would consider buying it - although I have hundreds of ships already.....

I think the wingsa re really needed as I don't like the model wthout them and they could even be a bit bigger

I dont think 'Athena' fits 40K nomenclature, though that separation might be intentional for legal reasons. Is it?

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

First off since GW won't be the ones casting them up I'm none too worried about their naming regime.

Besides I really don't like the BFG naming scheme. For the cruisers they had the boss man scheme they took from Space Fleet (Dictator, Overlord, Tyrant) but also some world names (Mars, Luna) and random ones (Gothic). Then it's all over the place Cobra, Firestorm, Sword...

So I have a whole nomenclature in mind based on Greek Myth. Athena Heavy Cruisers, Artemis Light Cruisers, Nike escorts, Hera battleships...

Fair enough.

While the Space Fleet models were smaller I always envisioned their ships much bigger. The top image would look good as a battleship. Indeed the Space Fleet capital ships mostly were classed as battleships.

Gothic, Firestorm and Cobra also came from Spacefleet. Coming from a country where navy ships have been named after abstract concepts/traits, cities, heads of state and flowers, I'm all for a confusing naming convention.

I notice that you've gone for an exclusively female Greek naming scheme?

In my head canon I renamed all the Space Fleet ships. The flat top ones (Gothic, Ironclad, Firestorm and Cobra) all got goddess names, the flying cathedrals (Emperor, Dictator... the other one) got God names.

All Greek, because Greek mythology is the best mythology.

One of these days I'll post the whole head canon/conversion.

PS always loved the Royal Navy's aspirational names - HMS Invincible, Endurance, and of course the classic Dread Naught which gave its name to the English language (and mediocre table top games!)

Invincible isn't so much aspirational as tempting fate; there've been seven, of which three sank.

Fort Campbell

I like the idea. This strikes me as something you'd see before the Age of Darkness, during man kinds peak. Or something like a High Lord of Terra's ship.

Still functional as a warship, but more aesthetically pleasing.

Latest revisions, hull landing bays. Going to move them either midship or to the sides right under the wing. ATM they're right behind the engines.

Hoping to have a printable file soon!
