The Last Chancer Who Survived

Let’s say you’re about to die, but before you go you’re allowed to have your favorite meal in the whole wide world. What would it be?

For me, I would want to spend an hour or 2 at Fogo de Chao. It’s a kinda upscale brazilian restaurant chain. These guys keep bringing you endless supplies of charred animal flesh on ginormous sword skewers and slice off what you need. They have steak, pork, lamb, chicken. And a nice salad bar that I always skip so I can save room for more meat. It’s always cooked perfect and so damn good. I’d eat till I burst and happily die right there, face down in my plate like that guy from Seven.

How about you?

A critical mass of highly enriched anti-uranium. It's tasty, it would be an interesting experiment in how the nuclear and matter/antimatter reactions would interact, and it would ensure that I take a lot of people down with me as I die. Conventional last meals are for losers.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

On a surly Warboar, leading the Waaagh!

Wow, this is a tough one. My wife and I are foodies and have done our fair share of travelling and dining around the planet, but I'd have to go with dinner at 'Charlie Trotter's' in Chicago, with the recommended wine accompaniments. Food on a level that's very rarely encountered. Unfortunately closed now and the namesake chef passed away much too early.

RIP Charlie.

Absolutely anything? Probably one of those giant spreads my grandmother used to make every sunday when I was a kid: red sauce, mountains of pasta, meatballs, sausage, braciole, all of it smothered in pecorino romano, and then when you were about ready to burst... maybe an easter pie.

My grandmother was a great cook. She died when I was around 22 or so, long before I realized I should have been a lot more grateful for what she did for me - among them, being a hell of a cook. I've made a few of those meals, and they're never quite as good, and they're all day affairs to boot.

If I get english name properly, it's miso marinated steak (japanese style cold served marinated beef). You don't simply eat it - it foreplays with your palate, makes gentle, sensual sex with your tongue and then you orgasm when it goes down your oesophagus. It's that good... The richest in both taste and sensual texture food I ever ate.

Close second is Polish traditional dish "barszcz z uszkami" (borscht with ravioli in english) of meat variety (it can also be served with cabbage and mushroom filling, but it's entirely different then). But I seriously doubt that you can eat this dish properly anywhere else than a good, traditional polish household of eastern border origin. Even in Poland I never encountered them really well made in a restaurant, where it's usually treated as a starter soup from pre-made parts... It's seemingly simple dish, that takes awfully long time to prepare (you first have to have beef cooked for broth (chilled), then make meat filling with it and make "uszka" by hand (raviolis are made using different dough) which can take half a day for a large cut of beef; cook them then chill them; make fresh "barszcz" and only then you can serve this properly).

Probably work

My grandparents' thanksgiving dinner. There's usually about 15 or so different sides made, but my grandmother makes a gooseberry pie that is hands down my absolute favorite. I think it's the only thing I've ever eaten that's made me outright smile. She also puts something in the ham glaze that's gotta be a controlled substance for how good it tastes.

2ND COURSE
Leberknödelsuppe - venison liver dumpling soup liver & bread dumplings, consommé, chives

3RD COURSE
Rehwurst - smoked venison sausage venison & bacon sausage, celery root, cannelini beans, turnips

4TH COURSE
Jägerschnitzel vom Hirsch mit Schupfnudeln - venison cutlets "hunter style" venison cutlets, chanterelle mushroom cream sauce, potato finger noodles

I also did a study abroad in Dublin a few years back, and ended up meeting the son of the owner of the John Kavanagh pub. The guy ended up cooking coddle for the whole group.

Probably my Dad's Lemon Marangue pie.

Or my moms Turkey. She always seems to know how to get it to the right level of moistness, even when i only eat the white meat, which is typically dry.

Though the one dessert i will eat without a single f given about calories is this chocolate wafer cake. Its literally oreo wafers and whipped cream, so good.

A meal from Orfeu, Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal. Sadly the place is closed. I've eaten in a lot of places the world over and this place topped them all.

Starter: Slices of blackened ham with glass of white wine;
Fish: Roast squid stuffed with blood sausage;
Main: Pig cheek, broiled until it falls apart as your fork touches it, with a glass of red wine and a Portugese side speciality that I can't name but is basically mashed bread.
Aperitif: Portugese port with 70% cacao chocolate.

Finish the night watching the sun go down with some continental lagers. Heaven on Earth.

My absolute favorite meal is rich cheese board: a variety of cheeses, breads, crackers, charcuterie, and preserves.

All served with Fatheads Headhunter IPA, a fantastic double IPA locally brewed in Cleveland, OH.

For me it's gotta be a steak I had at my sister's wedding rehearsal dinner. Was a place in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I believe it was called the Chophouse...don't quote me on that.

Man that steak though....they also had these HUGE shrimp at a sort of buffet bar that they had setup for the dinner, as well.

Tough one this. There is a Russian peasant dish which is a whole Salmon stuffed with Rice, boiled egg and various delicious herbage. Name escapes me at this time but it's bloody lovely...

Also, the Steak Tartare that I had in a beach restaurant in Saint Tropez earlier this year. Oh.My.God. . just wonderful....

The best meal I ever had was a burger at a tex mex place in Malta. I'd have that flown in, alone with some of the chimichangas from another place in Malta. Malta is really big into tex mex for some reason.

Not the best thing I've ever had but it was close, and immediately comes to mind; When I was in Hiroshima my girlfriend and I stumbled upon this small but very popular restaurant that serves cabbage pancakes, which apparently the area is known for. It was a serving of noodles mixed with egg and various other ingredients such as mushrooms and seafood, served on a bed of shredded cabbage, presented raw then you cook to your liking on the gas grill mounted in the table. Bit dubious at first but by God it was delicious and filling.
