bored at work, I went in search of old forums and found that the Megacon Games forum is no longer there (permanently down it looks like). A BGG thread mentioned that Megacon did not have the money to justify renewing the forum, but on the bright side also mentioned that MGC had silently added the 2.0 rulebook to the website as a free download. Most of the PDF is cards for all the factions, but it looks to have the full rules. You'd want to buy the hardback rulebook for the fluff if you care, but as somebody that bought the MERC: Recon kickstarter I've already got most of the factions and had been looking for just the rulebook to try out the skirmish game

The faction boxes are available online for pretty cheap, as is the surprisingly fun Recon boardgame.

Where are the faction boxes going cheapest? I'd love to get more. I was seriously considering just buying the best minis from their site, but at $5 each it makes more economic sense to me to buy the faction boxes when they dip below $25 on Amazon. But if there is somewhere that discounts them all the time, I'm in.

For the fluff, their novel, The Worker's Heart, is pretty darn good.

Too bad they are an awful, awful, awful company at relating to their customers. Frankly, the sooner these guys are back to asking 'You want fries with that?', the better. They had some good ideas...they could not translate that to a viable business, with their cones of silence, obfuscation, and outright lies, besides being rude to their backers who only wanted information. They couldn't even be bothered to FAQ Recon as the Kickstarter was running; backers had to do it for them. Good riddance, I say.

I'd heard they were trying to sell their IP and struggling. Don't know how that resolved, or if it's still pending...

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

https://www.gamenerdz.com/mercs has a few boxes for $23, although they only have 4 factions left and I doubt they'll restock considering how the company has been going. Supposedly they're under an NDA because another company bought the rights to Myth (and possibly the rest of their products). I have no love OR hate for Megacon Games, neither as a company or as designers. Their reputation after the Myth KS kept me from pledging for the RECON KS, I actively followed the updates and bought a full pledge set later off ebay. Actual backers were understandably upset, but for me it worked out great and I've really enjoyed the end product (except the awful dice). the figures are pretty good as long as you can stand PVC restic, and I can. I've actually had quite a surprising amount of fun with the RECON as a solo game and I tend not to play those.

Biggest downside was that it was nearly impossible to play actual MERCS, despite having 7 basically complete factions. I'd followed the updates during and after the KS and they were pushing MERCS 2.0 rules at the time, but there was no realistic way to bridge the board game and minis game since you needed an expensive $60 hardbound rulebook AND a $10 pack of cards for each faction plus shipping just to give it a shot. Not worth it at all, especially since I had been unimpressed with 1.0 rules

So that's why I was pleased to find out that the rules and cards are now (finally) free online, and wanted to share that since there was no official announcement. They kinda botched the game release anyways since there was NO support or promotion once it actually released, so a free PDF now is far too late to actually save the game. With the supposed buyout of Myth it really strikes me as a "We're about to head out, you may as well take this before we go" type move, but at least it's out there and like I said, I DO have like 7 of the factions. Worst comes to worst: I hate the game as much as 1.0, delete the PDF and still have a fun board game and a bunch of cool figs for Rogue Stars.

I backed both myth 1 and mercs. I didn't have that much of an issue with them other than huge delays in fulfillment but that seems inevitable with a lot of KS it seems.

I do like their art direction though so it'll be sad to see them close down.

Thanks for the link. If the shipping actually turns out to be free, I'll pick up EIC for sure and maybe another faction or two depending on finances.

I have one of the Recon games and plan to play it someday, but my board gaming life is currently limited to Shadows of Brimstone. It's a shame the company seems to be failing because I quite enjoy the minis and the background.

Gamenerdz no longer does free shipping on every order, you need to spend $75 to get free shipping now.

I'd quite like to pick up the newest minis for the factions I've got, but it's no-where near the top of my priorities at the moment.
