Hey,

8th edition newbie here (I last played in 4th edition). I was recently re-introduced to 40k via RPs and decided to try tabletop again. I've always had an interest in aviation so I thought why not try an aircraft heavy mechanized Death Korps list right? There are two attempts below. Both are very low on troop number, the first only has 15 infantry. For the second I replaced one of the aircraft with another 5 infantry and swapped the Centaur with a second Chimera, which is still a ridiculously low count especially for Guard. Obviously, I would like the third aircraft, however if people think the 5 extra Grenadiers will be a real improvement then so be it. I am also of course willing to completely re-work the whole thing if people think it's just terrible (while a somewhat thematic list, I do want it to be reasonably competitive) . Here we go:

HQ
• Death Korps Field Officer 28pts
– Plasma pistol

• Death Korps Field Officer 28pts
– Plasma pistol

Troops
• Death Korps Grenadier Storm Squad 71pts
– 2 have a meltagun
– Watch Master has a plasma pistol

• Death Korps Grenadier Storm Squad 61pts
– 2 have a plasma gun
– Watch Master has a plasma pistol

• Death Korps Grenadier Storm Squad 61pts
– 2 have a plasma gun
– Watch Master has a plasma pistol

• Death Korps Storm Chimera 103pts

• Death Korps Centaur Light Assault Carrier 54pts

Elites
• Officer of the Fleet 25pts

• Death Korps Commissar 35pts
– Plasma pistol

Flyers
• Vulture Gunship 160pts
– Twin punisher gatling cannon

• Avenger Strike Fighter 205pts
– Two missile launchers

• Avenger Strike Fighter 165pts

Total: 996pts

The two HQs and three Troops give me a battalion detachment (+3CP), and the aircraft give an air wing (+1CP) for a total of 7 CP

Version 2

HQ
• Death Korps Field Officer 28pts
– Plasma pistol

• Death Korps Field Officer 28pts
– Plasma pistol

Troops
• Death Korps Grenadier Storm Squad 71pts
– 2 have a meltagun
– Watch Master has a plasma pistol

• Death Korps Grenadier Storm Squad 71pts
– 2 have a meltagun
– Watch Master has a plasma pistol

• Death Korps Grenadier Storm Squad 61pts
– 2 have a plasma gun
– Watch Master has a plasma pistol

• Death Korps Grenadier Storm Squad 61pts
– 2 have a plasma gun
– Watch Master has a plasma pistol

• Death Korps Storm Chimera 103pts

• Death Korps Storm Chimera 103pts

Elites
• Officer of the Fleet 25pts

• Death Korps Commissar 35pts
– Plasma pistol

Flyers
• Avenger Strike Fighter 205pts
– Two missile launchers

• Avenger Strike Fighter 205pts
– Two missile launchers

Total: 996pts

The two HQs and three Troops give me a battalion detachment (+3CP) for a total of 6 CP

Current plan is to attach the Commissar and the Field Officers to the Grenadier squads (one in each), move them up in their transports disembark, and let rip, focusing the melta squad on the heavier targets. Tank-busting is largely taken care of by the Avengers, and the Vulture provides a lot of anti-infantry power. I don't quite know where to position the Officer of the Fleet; do I have him follow a squad around (effectively attach him to a squad), or sit somewhere further back and footslog to just within the required 18" range of the enemy for his ability to apply? Also, is it best to keep the Grenadier squads at least loosely grouped (to take advantage of Commissar and orders), or spread them out a bit more and essentially have each transport load be an independent force?

I also very much like the idea of Ad Mech and would happily modify the above to get some of them in (I might even switch to Ad Mech with a lot of air support, rather than, Guard). Also might drop the mechanized idea and go for airborne drop troops, either in dropships or just regular deep-striking Scions (in which case I would drop the Krieg-ness).

Thanks for helping out this clueless newbie

Hello fellow krieger
I think your flyers costs are really off, you have to add the weapons costs
I believe the Thunderbolt Heavy Fighter are 190pts a piece and Vulture Gunship is 180pts once you add the default loadouts

If I, for example, swap a Lord Commissar's bolt pistol for a plasma pistol, do I get the 1 point for his bolt pistol back?

For the default comissar you add the price of the bolt pistol, meaning a comissar actually costs (Price of the comissar + price of the bolt pistol)
So if you replace the pistol you end up paying Comissar + Plasma pistol

take e.g. a Chimera. It says I can swap the multi-laser with a heavy bolter. Here the wording is "replace", so is the cost of doing so free?

In that case you pay for Chimera cost + heavy bolter cost while for the default Chimera you pay for Chimera cost + Multi laser cost

Thanks for the welcome and the advice!
I've re-written the list (the model count is now even less than before...) with two variations, one with one less flyer to get slightly more models down.
