So I'm new to Warhammer, I don't have many models yet (No vehicles at all) and I'm playing friendly non-competitive games locally. Got to play my first game last night versus Dark Angels, it was a blast! I've arranged another game for tomorrow at 1,250 and this is the list I've come up with:
Alpha Legion - Vanguard Formation
Elites
10 Chaos Terminators
10 Combi-bolters
7 Power Axes
3 Power Fists
Mark of Slaneesh
20 Khorne Berzerkers
19 Chainaxes
1 Power Axe on the champion
9 Khorne Berzerkers
8 Chainaxes
1 Power axe on the champion
Icon of Wrath
Helbrute
Twin Lascannon
Power Scourge
HQ/Leader
Sorcerer with Terminator Armor
Combi-bolter
Force Sword
Mark of Slaneesh
So the whole idea of it is to try to close in and tie up as much of the enemy as possible in close combat to make up for my disadvantages in shooting power. I don't have many models yet, so I put some extra stuff on a couple of the units to meet the 1,250 points requirement, so obviously it's not super optimized. I've tried to come up with a strategy that I call the "Turn One Quicksand Strategy" .. for lack of any creativity on my part.
My strategy:
Deployment
Spend 1 command point to put the 20 berzerkers in 'concealment' with the Alpha Legion stratagem. Then place it in the enemy's line somewhere, 9" away from their stuff and spread out to envelop as much of their units as possible.
Turn 1 Movement
Move my 20 berzerkers closer to their targets, spread out wide if needed to envelop. Deploy my 10 Terminators 9" away from the enemy. Deploy my Sorcerer somewhere between the terminators and berzerkers. Move up my 9 Berzerkers and Helbrute from my deployment area.
Turn 1 Psychic
Have the Sorcerer use the Slaneesh special power to grant my Khorne Berzerkers the ability to shrug off damage on a 5+. Use Warptime on the Terminators, allowing them to move in closer to the enemy, hopefully something the Berzerkers can't reach.
Turn 1 Shooting
Fire with my units, hope for the best.
Turn 1 Fight
Charge in with as much as I can, try to lock down the enemy's strongest shooting units and wipe them all out if possible.
And that's generally it. I was hoping folks might have some advice for me. Is my strategy bad? Are my units too expensive? Is it better to bring cheaper stuff that isn't as strong? etc. Really any advice for a newcomer would be great. (Oh.. yes I know I need Rhinos. $35 each, they'll have to wait for now unfortunately.)
