Hello again,
Picked up a cheap NiB lot containing the Tohaa Starter and Makaul Box. Very little infinity experience and tohaa knowledge. What would be additional key models/units to complement the lot and help me expand?

Gathering the Informations.

Get the 300 point Tohaa box if you're able to find one at least--as it has another Tohaa Starter(Ectros and Sakiel don't have their Viral Combi profiles available outside of that box and you have the Combi Clipsos in there as well) and Makaul box, along with the Nikoul Sapper(a good piece), the Symbiomates and their Kaeltar handlers(a must have!), and a Kotail with Spitfire.

The Ectros with HMG and Sakiel with Spitfire blisters are a good buy, as are the Clipsos with Sniper Rifle and either of the Gao-Rael or Gao-Tarsos(both of these are going to get bundled into a single blister in the next few months at a discount, so you might want to hold off). Neema Saatar is going to get a new sculpt(we've seen the render of it but I don't think we have a definitive date) within the next few months most likely so avoid her as well.

Kerail Preceptors aren't a bad buy, nor are the Chaksaa or the Tohaa Support Pack. Either of the Kosuils can be a boon, same with the Igao.

If you want more than just Combi Rifle equipped Kamael, the Kamael box includes their special weapon variants.

TL,DR:
Go for the 300 point box and take your pick of one of the boxes or blisters out there. Play around in the army builder first and get a feel for the army's list building.

Remember that Tohaa can have multiples of what are called "Fireteam: Triad" that are able to be composed of three models from different units("Fireteams" normally require things to be from the same unit type).

Anything you see with Fireteam: Triad can be part of one. Tohaa benefit from having a wide collection available to you since it lets you really play around with things.

Hope that helped even a little bit.

Thanks sounds like a suggestion to purchase the whole line of tohaa. lol
I'm seen the 300pt starter but had already purchased the reg starter and makauls both for about half the price of just the starter.
I'll need to read up a bit on fireteams, but alittle worried as we have an escalation league starting and the first 2 weeks we probably won't be using fireteams but maybe tohaa will be the exception otherwise I need things that can work on there own.

Thanks

It is a bit hard to give just one suggestion for Tohaa, in my opinion, since they tend to have such great interconnectivity between their various units.

I'm seen the 300pt starter but had already purchased the reg starter and makauls both for about half the price of just the starter.

To give you an idea, the reason I'm suggesting the 300 point starter is that the Kaeltar+Symbiomates plus the Kotail with Spitfire and Nikoul? They tend to go in and out of stock, and the 300 point box that contains them is not long for this world(they recently announced that they only ever intend to have two different 300 point boxes available, and when they're sold out--they're gone) and is a fairly good deal for everything involved in it. It's also one of the easiest ways to get the Sakiel and Ectros beyond split-boxing the contents.

I might have explained that a bit better with my initial suggestion, but I see a lot of people kind of poopoo on the Tohaa 300 point box because it has the Starter set and Makauls(both of which were "must haves" when the Tohaa first launched with Campaign: Paradiso)...but the contents in it are exceedingly helpful to a new player or someone just expanding their Tohaa on a budget.

I'll need to read up a bit on fireteams, but alittle worried as we have an escalation league starting and the first 2 weeks we probably won't be using fireteams but maybe tohaa will be the exception otherwise I need things that can work on there own.

Thanks

See, now that would have been helpful information to have from the start!
In that case, get a box of Rasails. They have what is called "G: Synchronized"--meaning that whenever the Rasail acts? Their Chaksa Peripheral also has to act--at no cost to you! The Rasail can declare a Shoot order against one unit, and their Chaksa can Shoot another unit as part of it.
