I started a WIP blog in this thread before I saw that there is a whole section of the forum for WIP blogs... doh! Anyway, I'll be moving it over here. For those who haven't seen what I've been doing thus far or are too busy to go looking at the old thread, here are some of my projects, completed or no.

Deff Swkadron inspired dakkajet.

Flyin' Engine

Fully magnetized dakkajet with all options for wazbom blastajet, blitza-bommer, and burna-bommer. This one was my very first.

The flying battlefotress (still unnamed) is a work in progress. There is a ton to do on it still, but it is coming along slowly.

And the one I've actually been working on the most lately is my rat rod inspired wazbom blastajet. There is a ton of exhaust work to do on it still and I've been debating how I want to go about the assembly and painting of it since it will be so multi-layered. I've also got to build up the kustom force field and stikkbomb flinga to magnetize behind the air intake on the back of the cockpit.

Here is a better view of the bodywork and the gitbusta turret under the nose.

Love your work (and I don't even game Orks!) I particularly like the flying fortress- it has a bit of the look of a Catalina Flying Boat, or even a Navy Martin Mariner PBY.

I look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks guys! The big flying boat has been much neglected lately. I know a lot of the stuff I still need to do on it will be a pain and I just can't get motivated to get over the hump to where I can start detailing it. Over the weekend I did get to play a couple games with it though and I can certainly the big guy is super fun!

Fortunately, I've got a couple projects going and I've made some progress on the blastajet. I built out the smasha gun on the nose, started work on the kustom force field (which is going to be magnetized on there so I can swap out for the stikkbomb flinga), and got the exhaust pretty much finished on one side of the engine. So far I'm quite pleased with how it is all turning out.

As always, C&C is very welcome.

Loving your work so far. I'll deffinately be needing this kind of inspiration for my drawings. Have you written any character fluff or are these based on existing GW characters?

Thanks! I'm glad I could provide some inspiration if anything. And nope, no character fluff. They are loosely based on the Deff Skwadron comics (excluding the flying boat of course) but certainly not a direct copy.

I can't wait to paint it either. It's so close I can almost taste it. I've already started to paint the pilot!

The blastajet is coming along still. I have finished the exhaust pipes and started adding some basic detail to the engine area. I had pretty much completely blocked out the kustom force field before tonight when I decided to rip it off completely and change my approach. I decided not to magnetize that option and moved the whole assembly up towards the nose. I'm much happier with the silhouette now. It was looking a bit too "tacked on" for my taste. Of course now I've got a lot more work cleaning up the mess I made... Anyway, here is the progress so far:

The addition of the exhaust pipes definitely helps to break up the angular features near the front. Is the plan to add an ammo feeder connected to the main gun?

It's honestly looking fantastic so far. I like that the styrene you've added shows purpose & functionality instead of just slapping on plating for the sake of randomness.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more on the flying battle fortress as well. It would be cool to see a side by side shot next to the dakkajet for a sense of scale.

Awesome work dude!

Well life has been hectic lately and I've had very little time for hobby work lately. I've been plugging away at the wazbom blastajet in my spare time and have finally started painting it. Today I realized after perusing the forum that in my last update I hadn't even finished some of the plating let alone detailing, so I figured it was high time for a small update.

 Novasetri wrote:

Yep! That was the plan. And thanks for the encouraging feedback!

Here's a hideous picture of the blastajet as it stands this morning: a partially painted monstrosity. It'll clean up a lot as I get more paint on the poor thing. Because of the half-painted-ness of the plane, it's hard to see the finished detail, but hopefully this gives a rough idea of what the finished base model looks like. I added rivets, the ammo belt, and finished building out the back near the kustom force field.

As requested here is a size comparison between the flying battlefortress and a dakkajet. I threw the flyin' engine in there for good measure too.

I've been looking through various project blogs and stumbled upon Weirdingway's absolutely spectacular Navigator Household thread and it has me super excited to start fabricating on the big guy again and get that model finished. I'll probably knock out the paint job on the blastajet first so I don't have any distractions. Also I'm moving into a new place which I'll actually have room for a dedicated hobby space. Hopefully I'll be able to improve picture quality too!

I had some time this week and was able to finish the assembly and painting for the Wazbom Blastajet. I'm pleased how it came out in the end, pretty much just how I had pictured it.

An overview of the bottom of the plane and the turret on the nose.

In proper Orky form, the pilot can see absolutely nothing to the front except his gun.

Finally a couple detail pictures.

Now I that I have that little project done, I can get back to the fabrication on the flying battlefortress. As always C&C is appreciated! Hopefully the next time I post, there will be some significant progress on the big guy.

This is super cool man. Like I said before, your plasticard work is extremely impressive and had I not seen the prior wip pictures, I would be hard pressed to figure out what is actually GW and what's scratch built.

My only real C&C would be to add in some variation to the red. Maybe through weathering, blackened areas where exhaust fumes have built up a dusty layer, or some highlighting on individual panels. It's easier done with an airbrush (Still figuring it out for myself) but i've found one tutorial in particular that's awesome for ork planes in. I'll have to look back to see if I can find it.

That said - it's all about personal preference. Just trying to lend a "critical eye" as I always appreciate it when people pick out things that I could do better on as well.

Really looking forward to seeing more on the battle fortress!

I completely agree. I've been debating weathering my planes since I started painting them and I go back and forth on the issue. Honestly, I'm completely terrified of ruining the model with a crappy paint job. I'd love to see that tutorial if you can find it. I think I'm going to have to practice on some scratch plasticard for a while before I'll feel confident in adding those finishing touches. I think the planes would look much more Orky if they had even just a bit of wear and tear!

As for the highlighting, I did that to all the edges on the model, but in the pictures it really doesn't show much. As I've been doing them, I've been getting better at making that line along the edge really fine and neat, but I think I may have made it too fine now as it doesn't show as well. May have to go back and add some contrast in there too.

In other news, I've gone right back into fabricating on the flying battlefortress and have made some decent progress on the wings. I'll post some pictures up soon.

I have been eyeballing that kit for a while now. I don't know that the battlefortress that I'm building right now would work well as a troop transport, but perhaps once it is done I'll build something more suited to aerial deployment for the boyz.

I've made some progress on the flying battlefortress over the last couple nights. I've got the wings skinned, the engine intakes blocked out, and the wings themselves magnetized. There still is a lot of work to go in detailing, building out the tail boom, and the exhaust nozzles.

Some progress shots.

A little more complete each time...

As always, C&C is welcome. I think I'm going to take a break from the wings and try to get the last big stuff done on the body.

And now for something completely different.

It's been a busy holiday season and I haven't found much time to do much of anything hobby related. However, over the last few nights I decided to try my hand at sculpting. I've never done much more than fill in cracks or add the bomber jackets to my pilots, so full fledged sculpting of a figure was really a venture into the unknown. It was more fun than I imagined and I am quite pleased with the outcome. The whole endeavor was inspired by a picture I saw a while back of someone's sculpt of the squigeon from the Deff Skwadron comics for their Army on Parade entry. Since many of my own builds had been inspired by that very comic, I figured I would shamelessly steal the idea and create my own.

I've got a small clear base and stand ordered and on the way. When that gets here, all that will be left is to mount the little guy. As always, C&C is welcome and hope you enjoyed.

Thanks guys I really appreciate the compliments! While sculpting the nameless squigeon, I stumbled upon KroozA's build of a fighta-bomba. I absolutely love the idea of Ork pilots dive bombing ground targets starting from an orbiting krooza. Maching straight down on re-entry with guns a blazin' and then likely smashing straight into the ground at ungodly speeds is both hilarious and incredibly orky. With that in mind I decided to build the first member of Meatier Skwadron, an orbital dive bomber, starting with an F-4 as the framework.

The kit I started with and the original proportions of the model.

I like the overall shape of the F-4, but for my purposes, the kit was way too long. I wanted the overall length and width to be within the range of a standard dakkajet, so around 9" long and 9" wide. After much sawing and reduction, I got the body of the F-4 down to around 12" long and 9" wide which works perfectly for me. I figure any orbital fighter would be a bit bigger than a normal atmospheric plane anyway. Now to skin the wings...

Since I'm starting yet another plane, I figured it was time to clean house and get rid of some of the other planes that I had sitting around: the wazbomb blastajet I just finished, the flying engine, and a magnetized dakkajet. If anyone is interested you can check them out here. If you liked any of the various models I've been building, now is your chance to buy one or a couple at very reasonable prices.

I've been working away on my new dive bomber which I'm calling Da Komit. Because of the slight size discrepancy between 1:48 scale planes and 40k models, I have had to modify the cockpit area to allow an Ork pilot to fit. The original plan was to use a truck driver boy, but they are a good bit larger in every way than the pilot that comes with the dakkajet kit and didn't fit well. I have had to put a lot of the actual assembly on hold while I have an Ork pilot ordered. The plane itself is still in 5 large pieces and I'm sure there will be plenty of fabrication to get them to fit together well.

Since I haven't been able to actually assemble the jet itself, I've been working on the wings adding some detail and the main guns: twin-linked gatlers. I'm pleased with the progress so far. I think this will be my most detailed model yet. Without further ado, a couple progress shots.

Now to figure out if I want to work on magnetizing the bombs and rockets, finish the gatlers, or start on the dive brakes...

Thanks everyone! I'm excited to see how this Phantom turns out myself as unlike every other build I've done so far, I am going into this one without a plan. I am just building and changing it as I go. Oh and before I forget, in response to CommissarKhaine, in the interest of full disclosure I shamelessly stole the gatling design from Irondog Studios' Tater Titan. I saw it the other day and thought the same thing you did.

This has been a pretty productive week in terms of getting the wings pretty well blocked out while I was waiting for my pilot to come in the mail. I got my pilot yesterday and in a flurry of activity assembled the basic shape of the plane. Most of the pieces in the pictures are not actually glued on but delicately balanced to see what the overall shape will look like. It's really starting to come together.

Now to start to smooth out those primary forms into something a little more cohesive.

I made a good amount of progress today getting the body glued together and the underside built out. The general form is pretty well set now, but I still want to break up the Phantom silhouette in the front by adding vector thrust nozzles for when the Komit is in orbit. I have no idea how that is going to work and not look ridiculous...

Thanks guys! I've been making progress slowly getting the holes patched, the plane skinned, and some minor detailing done. I think tonight I will be doing some of the things I have been putting off such as getting the dive brakes or gattlers finished up.

Unfortunately, I have hit a pretty big roadblock and I'm not 100% sure how to rectify it. I was looking at the model the other day and nothing about it save some of the detailing screamed Ork to me. The profile itself, especially from a distance reads modern jet still. Now I realize that with paint and detailing it should bring out the orkishness, but I'm still not too happy with the silhouette. If anyone has any ideas on how to change the silhouette or if you think that the overall shape is fine as is, please let me know. Any and all suggestions are welcome!

In the mean time, a couple progress shots that also hopefully show the plane's silhouette better for anyone who has ideas.

Looking lovely, though i see what you mean when you say about making the profile more orkish. A stubbier nose(think mig 21) might helep, if that's still feasible? It would make the model stubbier and look very rugged.

You could also carve off the nose (perhaps at a slight angle) clean it up, and have a third air intake. Gubbinz it up!
