As a new player, I am constantly struggling to choose my army. I currently have painted up both sides of Dark Imperium, and have random kits floating around, including the Death Masque Harlies, some B@C terminators, and some easy to build reivers. My recent fancy was thinking about making some Dornian Heresy Blood Angels using the new Mortarion, and while I like the tentacle and horn look of new nurgle, I'm not a fan of the guts hanging out. It's left me in this hobby purgatory as I try to decide what army I want to do, of the 10 or so ideas that I have, but am unable to really sell myself. Any suggestions?

What kind of army do you want? Both background and gameplay style?

If the guts are the only issue why not green stuff over them?

"That's how a Luna Wolf fights."
"If you can't keep up, go and join the Death Guard"
"It had often been said that Space Marines knew no fear, but when Angron charged, he ran"

I personally started an army that HAS a codex out now.

No. I started Nids a few years ago because I loved the models. After becoming disillusioned with how bad their last codex was I moved over to Dark Eldar for the same reason I started Nids, they have amazing models, and I could actually win games with them.

Start an army with models and style you lile. Otherwise you'll abandon the hobby quite soon since painting miniatures that you don't like is extremely boring or get tired of playing an army that doesn't reflect how you like to play 40k.

About the codex, don't bother about it. By the time you'll finished 1000-2000 points of stuff the majority of the codexes should be released.

Seems like you've found the ones you like the look of, so now you decide which one has the playstyle you want. Alternatively you could look at the one you like the fluff of the most. If that doesn't narrow it down enough than you just have to pick. Throw darts or something.

Another option is to get battle scribe and try to build some lists with the models you like. If you can build a list that you want to play then don't play that army

Exactly.

If you're a new player with gaming aspirations and not just modeling aspirations, you've already fallen into the trap of "random kits lying around".

It's tough but the only way to not waste tons of money is:

A) one army at a time.

B) choose an army you simply "like" regardless of power or competence.

Some good advice above. Build on what you've got is my advice. Add some chaos marines. Add some straight marines. Keep the harliies for skirmish games. Try to focus on these two fronts and avoid branching into xenos... Now if I could only do the same..

I recommend going to the 40k wiki site and reading about each army's backstory, tactics, and major achievements.

Also make sure you like the look of the basic troops since you will likely have an army comprised mostly of them. I wouldn't pick an army just because you like one particular model.

The problem with this, is that for the most part the only armies that have been given decent backstory and tactics are speshmareenz. I particularly like the Blood Angels / Sanguinius stuff, though some of the others also have good background to them. Imperial guard probably have the next-best amount of backstory and variety. It's a shame, because everyone and their mother has a space marine army, and so it gets boring playing marine vs marine all the time in the local "meta". That's why I am currently Orks and Eldar - The filthy Xenos are far more uncommon.

Double unfortunately, GW ignore Xenos a lot of the time, and so you end up with less backstory and less fun/interesting rules, for the most part. You get some cool models though, and with Orks you can basically build whatever you want and counts-as it into your army which can be rather therapeutic.

Something thats worth keeping in mind though - You *can* pick an army based on units you like the look of, even if they aren't actually very "competitive". I picked Orks ages ago mostly because I thought the walkers were cool, and so I run a very mek-heavy list with Dreads and Killa-kanz and the like. Lots of fun to model and build and convert and paint. Competitive? HAHAHAHA no. Orks have been nerfed to the point where you can literally only be competitive if you run nothing but Ghazkhrul and 150+ boyz. But that would bore me to tears to collect and paint, and so I make my ork list fun for me to make and own. If/When I ever play with it, it's going to be a laugh but I know I'll lose against the filthy hoomans.

Pick an army you'll enjoy building. If you're anything like me, you'll spend a lot longer building and painting, than you ever will playing the game.

Pick the army you will enjoy painting the most. For me the biggest factor was looks, then fluff, and then ease of painting since I can be lazy.

I like the fluff for the death guard, and my play style matches the lore for the Death Guard at least. I like tough mid to close range infantry, terminators and heavy hitting armor. I'm just not a fan of all the pus and guts. The lovecraftian tentacles and monsters are cool though. I like terminators and foot slogging infantry. This is what pushed me towards Death Guard. I suppose I could use Mk3 armor for plague marines. I had also considered doing a Scarab Occult Terminator heavy army with Berserkers as Chaosified Khenetei. Or a Paladin focused Grey Knights army. I love Mk3 and Cataphractii armors, they are my favorite ones, and with some conversions I could make them plague marines. I also prefer a army that uses hard hitting and rounded units, less varied in units. Like the above armies.

This is what I'd do. I'd write out a list of the 10 armies you have ideas for and one by one check them off until you get down to two armies. Once you have the two armies decided, flip a coin.... You'll know which army you want before the coin lands.

Keep in mind that you don't have to use specific models, as long as they represent the same size/gear/weapons as the model you want to field. I don't much care for the modern Plaguemarines in the new starter box so I just built my own using some resin-parts and some MkIII marines from the Horus Heresy boxes.

Likewise, my "Chaos Space Marines" are nothing of the sort...just MkIII marines w/ rusted up gear and some alternate heads (a few Chaos backpacks)

They're not actual Chaos models - heck I've used almost zero Chaos models in my Chaos Space Marine army, but the gear is right and it's instantly recognizable as Chaos when you take a look at the force. You're not limited to a certain aesthetic. Any army you can simply build a colour scheme the way you want - as long as the equipment and models are accurate you're fine. You're on the right route if you're considering HH plastics --- cheap on eBay from the HH boxed games and really make your entire Chaos force look proper.

Where did you get the set of helmets in the first picture? :0 I love them.

Maxmini.eu I think --- they're nice but friggin' huge...almost unusable (very tough to position due to the size). Maxmini makes wonderful resin - some of the best I've received, but the scale is all over the place so far.

I think eventually, on a long enough gaming timeline, we all end up with an Imperial, Xenos, and Chaos army, through starter set accumulation, and random grabs here and there...
