So i am new to this. Bought the black reach set and bought a space marine army and another 2 chaos armies(think approx 2500-3000 points; incl deomons). Also bought some extra ork units (e.g. gokanaut, 2 battlewagons). Like the painting but also want to play. In the gamesworkshop they gave me like a small magazine with new rules. But my question is: which codexes do I need?

You might wanna confirm what you have, as space marines and chaos can be a few things and it might not be super obvious what you've got if you are really new to the hobby. With that in mind, you'll probably want some mixture of

Codex: Space marine (if these are loyalist space marines)
Index imperium 1 (if you have anything from the other stand alone SM chapters)
Also possibly make sure they aren't Grey Knights, who are fairly distinctive so this should be easy enough.
Codex: Chaos space marine (for heretic space marines)
Index chaos (if using chaos demons)
Index Xenos 2 (for the orks)

Thanks! Think the space marines are general ones. (Ultra marines?)

Could you take a picture of your full collection that you got so we can have a look at what kind of armies you could make?

Here pictures of the spacemarines. Guess its mainly black reach. Still awaiting the delivery of a lot of chaos models. Will make a picture once received!

It's a nice little Space Marine collection, you could run a terminator alpha strike list, dreadnought support and min squads of space marines as troops. Not a very competitive list but could be fun.

Chaos one might be more difficult. Still have to figure out what is wat. Currently already have this at home and all needs to be repainted. Still awaiting a package with a lot of units incl units such as kharn, forgefiend, skull canon, noise marines and terminators.

Defiler, vindicator, predator, couple of spawn, OOP metal terminators, OOP metal raptors, OOP metal rubric bitz and lots of CSM bitz. It'll take a lot of work to get that lot built into a proper force. Again, with the large amount of terminators and raptors you could make a simple alpha strike list with heavy support. Make the termites Max units with combi-plasma and mark of Slaanesh and you have a very strong turn 1 killer with a potential of 40 shots.

More Terminators, Noise Marines, a Forge/Maulerfiend, Skull cannon, bloodletters and Kharn.

Again, more of the alpha strike + support units, you could also sit Kharn with your support units to give them all re-rolls to hit. The Daemon stuff is not great since they don't really have much to support them with auras and they have no delivery system. The Noise Marines can be VERY good but not entirely optimised without several units and re-roll buffs.

I'm not much of an expert on Orks (chaos player) but from what I hear they aren't great this edition.

As for your Chaos, of course you can add them to your existing stuff, you can make quite a nice back field gunline with a Terminator deep striking horde.

For me the last batlle i played would be skaven vs empire in mordheim or orcs vs high elves years ago. Anyway like the painting very much and like the variation you can use on orks. However a good friend of me is willing to play warhammer with me so it would be good to know the gaps so i can order some units which can fill those gaps.

If you want to know what gaps you can fill first we'll need to know what sort of chaos army you're running (I won't touch on the Irks myself because I wouldn't be able to give you any meaningful advice there): which legion it warband would you like to model your army after, do you want a gunline, melee or a mix of both in your army, are there any units that you desperately want to use so we can try to build an army around them, etc.? Basically what do you want from your chaos army?

Honestly, I'd say try out what you have here and see what you like and don't like, you've already got a lot of options at a glance. Not much I see that you need.
