Daemon prince has 8 str 8 -2 ap 2 D thanks to ichor. He gives either helldrake his psychoc power for 5+ wound prevention and helldrakes attempt to tie up heavy shooters. Use a cp for anti horde if needed

seekers come out and cover a large area to prevent deep strikers in bubble if i go first, and if lucky tie up some enemies with charges. Keep the herald hidden for 2 str 4 rend, 2 str5 ap0/ seeker.

Going to see how far i get in painting by the So Cal Open

Tried out blending paint test for warp armor. Going to try painting both helldrakes base armor, with blue trim and bright red mixed with purple and pinkish colors.

So now I realised that wet blending wothout recording what the ratios and layers are is a big no no so had to repaint entire figure. There were no tutorials on warp colors or galaxy armor but i did find this on youtube to help reference. The effort will pay off, but man, Im not sure if army will have overall more than 3 colors on majority of army. This is going true test of dedication, as most of my weekends consost of friends and group of friends thet play DND really slowing down goals.

So while playing dnd this weekend, I noticed a MTG poster with purple lightning on a dark purple dragon which has inspired me to change all armor to a dark purple with night lords style purple lightning in addition to the galaxy theme armor plating. So marine shoulder pads/ so me circular areas will be galaxy themed similar to helldrake with the 7+ layers of paints.

Instead of having to mix different ratios i threw some gloss varnish in with the americana paints giving it more model coverage and removing the dullness from using a non miniature paint made mainly for canvas paints in addition to mixing nontoxic medium paint retarder after using nontoxic paint thinner. Water works the same way but i am applying thinner directly into the bottle, and then mixing the pant on the brush with a light amount of retarder for easy blending woth previous color. More layers are taking longer but model is about 3/4 done.

Since you are intending on going to an event and painting these models well I suggest you invest in some paints worth the salt.

Things I suggest you get is Vallejo flow improver, a wet pallet (zip lock container, sponge, paper towel, water, parchment paper), testers dull/gloss coat, and a proper set of colors either Vallejo or army painter. GW is ok, but the cost is high. In total all these things should only set you back about 30$ and will have tremendous changes in the outcome.

Also if you got the extra dosh get army painter purple primer. It will save you time/work.

If you went all out and ordered all this on Amazon now it may clock in at like 60$ (I would order about 20 bottles of paint). thewarstore sells all of these items cheaply, and ships quickly. Maybe like 35$ from him.


A dark purple with space/lighting would be great. Best done with an airbrush, short of that use a sponge or dry brush to get the clouds. Next level painting on youtube, has some good space effect vids on faberic and other things.

Cool idea for the armour plates on the Heldrake.

Should be a cool looking army, once you're done.

@cormedapanda thanks for the tips, ordered the purple primer, which i think will def speed this up. . Experimented with pink lightning, not a fan so going to do a brightish purple with minimal pink detailing. Blue lightning turned out very successful, now that i have a general idea how to paint it on. Going to stick with blue lightning, bright purple armor, and probably black and pink guns/ symbols.

So a minor chamge to minimize damage dealt in case opponent alpha strikes. Seekers die way too fast to everything amd there is no way to shield them. Add to that they are 19 pts/ model and have no shooting and low damage in small numbers. I currently tried out army painter and it is way brighter than naggiroth purple so after repriming figures, i have began doing a 2:1 mix of drakenshade blue ink and naggoroth for quick shading. The next layer for armor pads/ decoration (galaxy design armor plating in select areas) is going to be a drybrush of screamer pink for dark red to drybrush on.

Back in 5th Frontline Gaming had built me a drop pod space wolf list and man do i miss death from above. Heralds currently get screened by helldrakes with daemon Prince as everything drops in. Another flyer nerf and hero nerf is probably already being developed but until then the list:

I got first turn and alpha striked. Smite spam did average damage taking out a sentinel but i dropped everything down and forgot about his rough riders he held in reserve. It was a glorious uphill bloody battle. I forgot the Ic rule is now the closest model not within x inches of a unit and paid for my mistake. Emperors children League game loss 18-2 (first blood and slay the warlord.)

I will remmeber to hide them next time as that would have been a major turning point hiding them behind 4 squads of obliterators. One thing i learned is against AM a hard flank is a solid strategy because they rely heavily on rapid fire. If i hit from the side he had his tanks on it would force him to rearrange his entire bubble which may have let me overrun his tank flank. This edition is way better than 7th IMO for the sheer fact almost everything feels killable if thought goes into the army and strategy. (Although i think flyers should not be able to block shooting at my charcaters.)

I killed his leader and got first blood. Getting to the leader was through a horde of conscripts, lascannon squads, and commmand squads but my Daemon prince slayed him in glorious battle hand to hand.

Also I found the model i painted at the free paint and take from Pacific Con between DND games. Friends were rushing me so only had an hour to paint him. I give you: my half orc druid! (Lvl 1)

So I am beginning to lean towards noise marines so may be completely getting rid of using sllanesh daemons. Since first blood is almost guranteed with whoever goes first I have placed an order to SPELLCROW for some pleasure marines sonic weaponry, and although not GW the model is still 90% GW and so legal. I got tired of every time going on the website to order sonic weapons, they are linited or sold out.

Also, I wanted to do galaxy theme armor for main part of armor. I watched a few galaxy Painting videos while enjoying a few drinks and noticed for people without air brush to create specklibg effects, a cheap tooth brush, with a little bit of work to learn to control flicking is starting to have army devlop an overall galaxy effect. I sprayed the obliterators alien purple, drybrushed with hoeth blue, washed with a 2:1 mix of drakenshade with naggoroth and am now speckling xerxus on to my obliterators.

I may be drifting away fully from slaanesh daemons and hell drakes to conplete a double battlion list with 4 obliterator squads and a dark apostle to mofify leadership and minimize morale failures. Also trying to squeeze in a double battlaltion and spearhead for my list but its development ng into just a double battaltion.

Playing a GSC league game sunday which will be a true test to determine if the helldrake escort can protect against 20+ genestealers ready to ambish. Also, looks like another wash of drakenshade mixed with naggaroth 2:1 is needed for shading again. I might also use xerxus purple for more light shading as it is really good for blending dark colors. Also the GW ceramite white base is a bit lumpy, so after some paiNt restoration using thinner medium and a dental tool I used the flick toothbrush technique. Its a little sloppy, but blending purples is easier than most other colors for darkening areas.

All objectives secured. We called it turn 4, opponent alpha struck and made mistake of having one squad of genestealers camp an objective for points while other one tried to wipe my characters.

Deep striking 4 units of obliterators and 2 units of raptors with helldrakes to soak up wounds he just couldnt handle the amount of spam smite and drowning in dakka (emp children strategem allowed basically 5 instead of 4 shooting obliterators for 2 turns).

One thing i noticed was although slower, i would have so much more offensive damage and ability to drown opponent in dice if i dropped both helldrakes and both raptors squads for legion style marching emperors children.

Game two was a casual pick up game against an extremely resilient tau army. He basically used a massive amount of units that could have feel no pain in addition to a 400 point forged world model that could get a 3+ invulnerable save. I had to kill it in close combat with my demon prince and this resulted in the loss of two raptors three Wounds to my demon Prince and 2 on both of my Heralds from the power surge to drop the 3++ his model had.

He also flanked my characters with two units one being a hazard suit squad the second being a crisis suit squad with the usual drones in addition to some fire warriors and some new units I did not recognize for a gun line.

When the dust cleared all that was left of both armies were to raptors my to hell drakes and to Heralds on the board.

I would have tied or possibly even lost the game if he had focused on the hell drakes instead of all of my units dropping in from reserve because of how slow obliteraters move.

Overall both games were extremely close and extremely fun and to whoever is complaining about Tau not being powerful enough in this edition needs to take another look at all of the abilities they have. Insane synergy before their codex is even out proves that commander spam isnt the only threat competitvely and are worth dusting off some of the older units.

To anyone who is looking to play Gene stealer cults I would fully recommend it. GSC is extremely hard to get the hang of it but it can be very powerful in the right hands.

Helldrakes are what is needed for my army and at the same time feel almost useless towards the end of every game. The most frustrating thing about hell drakes in this edition is when you look at there stats they have 12 wounds at toughness seven and they can regain one wound for each turn that you have. Ok, cool, but the flyer update made them borderline useless.

Helldrakes are flyers and so cannot hold any objectives they have minimal damage output and in assault they are probably killing an average of two models because the claws are just extremely weak.

The only thing currently going for the hell drakes is that they can shield your characters. The next issue is that every competitive opponent you face should have at least one thing that can get around models that are blocking your characters and so the hell drake becomes more and more of a less useful option.

What is needed in my list specifically is a bubble wrap mobile shield

I have made the following changes to my army list I love the hell Drake models but they are really not going to win me any games on their own. Only one is needed, and I would say 0 for the average chaos player trying to hold objectives.

Overall winning 2 grueling high casualty games ended in chaos victory. The bikers added to my army will bubble wrap my characters much more nicely than 2 helldrakes.

Daemon pronce str 9 deals mortal wounds on 6+ trait and warptime . Bikers and helldrske try to shoeld him and 5 heralds.

I am thinking of adding noise marines in alpha legion vanguard after the SCO. Obliterator emperors children and slaanesh alpha legion for -1 to hit until close enough to fire with 4-6 squads in rhinos after October. Painted these up 2 years ago decided against repainting.

Galaxy armor is cool for bigger models but it was too much work to put on each mode, especially in a 2 month time frame. 2:1 Naggaroth basecoat and drakenshade, drybrush nagaroth base, 2 drybrush layers of xerxus and currently drybrush layer of genestealer purple. Highlights will be 3:1 white to genestealer purple, which will then be shaded back into genestealer purple for a simple highlight blend vs mixing colors and working up to brightest to speed this project up.

Also, tomorrow is a tournament league bracket vs everyones favorite: Orks!!! If I win I go to the next round, if I lose I get to focus fully on painting.

So turns out only 9 bikes instead of 10 are allowed so replace 1 with a flamer and a meltagun. I ended up winning 10-9 against a brutal Ghazgkull horde list. I forgot to ask what weirdboyz powers he chose and that one was a teleport. I started my bike bubble wrap at the frontline, and he got lucky and charged my daemon prince, 3 heralds and my bike squad with his squad of shoota boyz.

This forced me into a heavy deviation. Obliterators dropped in, but because of threat of losing the relic to the horde immediately, I put all my available firepower into the slugga boyz and storm boyz.

A lot of back and forth maelstrom, we both knew the only way to secure the relic was to try to overpower each other. Painboyz, werd boyz, Ghazgkull, and mekboyz it was an uphill battle, and very bloody. Table quarters were the toe breaker. I must always double check what can flank my army.

I fixed my list up a little more. 2 double taps using endless cacophony is decent, but I need to have a better chance to kill a unit so added one last battalion. I almost went with summoning daemons, but as they do not work towards the detachement benefits, my daemonettes will sit on the shelf for now...

Can have minus three to hit it for people mixing gods.

So list has been fine tuned now that I have gone through a few games. Sadly, 2 coworkers quit and my supervisor has taken the same days off as the So Cal open #ouch. So, I am still going to try to make the army have a solid look, and time is starting to run out. Will probably not make it, about a 50/50 chance because of work.

Meta mafia is hosting an event in Sacremento October 14 so if I cant make it to an event Ive been planning since May 3, at least theres a few local tournaments. The purple armor just needs the final highlight blended in, so tonight begins warplock bronze. When using metallic colors, sometimes they bleed into armor from too much water or a slip of the brush ruins all that layering of armor. So first will be metals, followed by horus heresy era white shoulder pads. Touch up of purple at the end.

The current goal is to have all units share the same colors by doing miniature line painting since its looking like the army wont be finished in time now.

Also, the league Im in is determining my next opponent as we have now entered an elimination bracket so I have 2 weeks to focus on painting.

Going to be gone for weekend. DnD chapter 7 Im playing a level 9 paladin and a lvl 3 tempestus cleric( max lightning damage defensive) so will be gone all weekend. In this newest chapter of DnD there are dinosaurs and if you die you cannot be resurrected anymore. Also sunday is a 8 hour homebrew session, both far away from hime.

The line Painting is coming smoothly, but will be too busy this weekend to get more done intil monday.

So after a lot of consideration, I will be using my Emperors Children as Alpha Legion. They are just too good and no one really is into assault this edition. FLG for the SCO is requiring paint so I had to rush and use gold sharpie for now. My actual paint scheme is one I did awhile ago giving them a “Joker” style look. I will be repainting most of the gold into red as with this example once the SCO is done. I made some major tweaks to my list to really maximize the advantage Alpharious has. The one difference to my old scheme is the inner shoulderpads will be painted blue and green to pay homage to alpharious, and will be mostly painted up by next year.

Hit all the shoulder pads with stegadon scale green for now. Had to speed paint 3 colors on my noise mar Ne squad and had to convert 5 sonic blasters since Im mobbing up. Im tempted to drop the warp bolter on the daemon prince for an icon of excess but logistically infiltration is before the first turn is determined so is a huge risk to put them right in front of the enemy without knowing who goes first, especially with 12 units so will not get the +1 on the first turn roll off and I have never seized a single game. Will slowly transition most of the sharpie gold into a dark blood red hut for now painting the flesh.

Metahammer tomorrow. I work until midnight so getting less than 5 hours of sleep before heading down to Sacremento. I dropped 2 noise marines with blasters to squeeze in a second squad of cultists. ITC draft missions will be used for fairness, so the goal is to take out those ObSec leman russ spearhead detachments and those obsec conscripts. That spam army alone will win just from mass of bodies so its going to be a crazy fight. At least, thats what Ive built my list to fight against. Advil and coffee will be taken tomorrow.

So the metahammer tournament I had one major win, one minor loss, and was tabled once, ending up ranking 12/18 players.

Game 1 I played against a nasty gunline list of 2 storm ravens, a huge screen of conscripts, 4 librarians, 3 astropaths, and mortars devastators. Noise marines damage output just wasnt enough and then they died after a desperate charge. Major loss, I ended up being tabled. He went on to win the tournament .

Game 2 was afainst CSM iron legion special weapon heavy bikers, alpha legion havocs, iron warrior plasma guns and a chaos knight. It started off close, but havocs with a 2+ save in cover were too hard for my noise marines to kill between good rolls and then retaliating with his knight to kill them and a squad of obliterators. The game ended with a minor loss, and went to turn 6.

Game 3 was against a decent necron list. Tesla immortlas rerolling ones thanks to the walkers was interesting. He wrecked my squad of noise marines, who retaliated only killing one. Obliterators firepower combined with smite was overwhelming. Major victory turn 5 destroyed his army.

Im going back to a list similar to my original one. With objective holding being important more than kill points, Im going to try this at the so cal open.

Got approval to use my converted chaos spawn as Obliterators. The new missions are objectives so my objective is gonna be to hold as many as possible while obliterators jump in and shoot 72 shots, with raptors hunting down tanks with a prescience casting sorceror. Chaos lord is there to die and counter attack horde units while giving aura, etc. using daemon prince warptime
