Ever since i began painting my iron hands my facination for walkers has increased, infact so mutch that i want an sm army of only walkers.
And seeing some of the FW dread models has not made me less inntrested.

So here is what im wondering, can i make a SM dread only army for IH, or do i need to dab into a different chapter?
idm using FW models at all if needed.

You need the Chaplain Dreadnought and something that can cover a Patrol detachment at least but otherwise yes

Chaplain Dreadnought + Vanguard Detachment.

Boom, only dreads. As a bonus this lets you field the FW dreads too with nary a fleshie to be seen.

Iron hands is a decent choice for an all Dreads list, but I would personally go for Salamanders. Getting 1 reroll to hit and 1 reroll to wound per "unit" is pretty amazing for an army of 1 model units.

Dident know of that chaplain model. thanks!! (dread army here i come!)

While rerolling hit and wounds of 1 sounds very tempting, i am a little worried about the survivability of the dreads while they slowly make it across the board towards the objectives, hence the IH that gives me a 6+ save. (double save on a venrable)

Yeah if you don't care about your Dreads living you would want Salamanders. Otherwise each Chapter trait is actually good for specific Dreads. Deredeo Dreads being able to fall back and shoot with Ultramarines? Pretty cool.

You can also use a BA librarian dread instead of an FW chaplain dread.

If you want IH, though, you'll need the chappy.

Also, fun fact. Since Iron Hands have Iron Fathers handling the spiritual side of things, your Chaplain Dread can look anywhere from the FW Chaplain Dread to something that looks like a giant dreadnought techmarine.

Basically, go wild with the conversions.

Just checked the Forge World index, Imperial Armour for Adeptus Astartes and looked at the Chaplain Dread and I can't see any mention of him leading an all dreadnought army...

Can anyone direct me to how where it is written or how it works?

He's a HQ model. Vanguard detachment needs 1 HQ and min. 3 Elite.

I've been using Bjorn: At 2000 points you kinda need a second detachment, so unless you want two chaplains you'll need to find a chapter specific dread HQ or run a tech priest.

One vanguard and one spearhead generally does it for me. You can use the spearhead to hold your Mortis dreads and your leviathan.

No it's not reroll 1's only. It's reroll one hit roll and one wound roll per unit, in shooting and in melee. I'd say that is better than a 6+ FNP.

That's exactly my thoughts. You will see a difference with the rerolls in FAR more cases than the "maybe if I'm lucky I'll roll a 6" Iron hands tactic
And it isn't re-roll 1s, it's 1 reroll to hit and to wound. Like the old Master-crafted + Digital weapons rules put together. NOT like old Preferred Enemy.

Just imagine several Venerable lascannons Dreads moving up as they get toward melee. They'll hit on 3+ while moving (BS2+ heavy weapon) and with 2 shots rerolling 1 of them, you are almost guaranteed to hit with both shots, then wound with both. And being Venerable gives you the 6+ FNP that they would have received from being Iron Hands.

Thanks for clarification, Hanskrampf

Another question: Would Imperial Fists work at all for an all dreadnought army? (haven't followed 8th ed. much yet)

All dreadnought list is an awesome idea, though if you are willing to add an allowance for techpriests I feel like it will go better for you. a goodly number of cheap Techpriests seem like the solution to the "How will they survive footslogging across the table?" question. Especially since they can move right with the dreadnoughts unlike alot of the other vehicles. If you did go techpriests I would def go salamanders, as all of those rerolls are real good.

If you want even more and bigger walkers, you can take 3 HQ Dreads (Librarian Dread from an ally?) And an Imperial Knight in a Supreme Command Detachment too.

Paint them up as your own special snowflake chapter and worry about what chapter you will want to play them as later. That is to say, Salamanders.

Raven Guard Chapter Tactics work great for Dreads:

* -1 to Hit at 12"
* Deepstrike before turn starts and move = kill lots of stuff

So the options seem to come down to choosing a vanguard detachment with one (or more) of the following HQs:

* Chaplain Dreadnought from Forgeworld

* Salamander Bray'arth Ashmantle dreadnought

* Blood Angels Librarian Dreadnought

* Space Wolves Bjorn the Fellhanded dreadnought

Did I miss any HQs?

Well - dreads have chapter tactics which is basically a special rule that your chapter has. Imperial fist it's ignore cover on all your weapons. Pretty freaking fantastic trait if you ask me. Probably second best in terms of efficiency next to Salamanders.

What do you all think about Deredeo with the 5+ invul buff?

Apart from him I'd have 2 shooty Ven dreads, 1 Redemptor and 1 Techmarine.

The rest of the army are troops in reserves with Issodon. I'm thinking about getting a 4th dread and I'm not sure which would fit best.

If you are going for a forge world purchase - go for the leviathan dread. It is super OP.

If you really want to have fun, run a couple Techmarines on bikes and a bunch of Venerable Dreads in an Iron Hands army. Double 6+++ and repairing on a majority 7T is hilarious.
