I'm looking to pick up the two red books digitally very soon to help me choose a legion, but I know they're a bit behind in terms of which legions are in there. Bearing in mind I probably won't be doing SW, TS, BA, WS, or DA, is it OK to grab the books now, or should I wait for an update? On that note, do the digital versions of the books update without me having to buy them again?

(I'm new to the heresy, so please correct me if I've misunderstood.)

There's no hint that the red books will be updated... but

The new rule book is due out "soon". We don't know if that will change anything.
Most likely it wont.

If you pick them digitally, won't them be automatically updated anyway ?

Red books should be safe, the next one is just 7th with basic rules alterations and Angelus isn't out untill 2019.

You should be fine for now. Just avoid the Black Books I-V. VI and VII have not been incorporated into the red books yet, and it might be a while before they are.

Once you have decided on your Legion, I can't recommend the Black Books that go with it enough. The sheer amount of background fluff, artwork, and just awesomeness of the Legions is barely contained in those excellent books. Don't pass them up just because they might have outdated rules!

I found Book One for less than 60€, and I bought it even if I planned to buy the red book too, I can only agree on that.
And the fluff about the others legion wasn't bad, neither !

They are pretty awesome, no doubt, but at the price they cost, having to buy another book on top for up-to-date rules is kind of a bummer.

As a Space Wolves player, I guess I'm kind of lucky/unlucky, depending on your perspective? On one hand, I think it's pretty unlikely that the compartively recently released Book VII Inferno is going to get the Red Book Bundle treatment any time soon, and so I don't need to worry about it getting made partially obsolete by a cheaper, lighter book any time soon. On the other hand, having to buy a £80 book to get mandatory special divergent units, on top of a £32 book to get the rules for everything else and - most likely - another £40-80 rulebook when it gets released is a lotta cost for an already expensive niche of the hobby.

There's a part of me that's jealous of players whose legion rules is covered in the pair of £32 red books.. although the parts of me that aren't my wallet is pretty stoked on that big black leather book arriving so I can faun over it with oohs and aahs. If the legion I played was covered in books 1-5, I probably wouldn't have bothered getting the big shiny, nice, full-colour tome. I can't decide how I feel.

Edit: For what it's worth, I just ordered the Age of Darkness Army List/Legion books, as well as the Book VII for my Space Wolves just this week myself. I can't see any possible world where the contents of any of those books will be obsolete in 2018 at least.

(I know the Legion book was overkill as all my legion stuff is in the big black Book VII, but I found the pair of red books on eBay for £40 including shipping, and figured for chump change extra I'm paying for it over just the Army List book from ForgeWorld, it might be useful for comprehensive rules and maybe for helping convert friends.)

Thanks for all the advice! I took the leap on the red books, and they're really nicely produced even digitally. Might have to grab book III at some stage, as it has my two favourite legions (Alpha Legion and Imperial Fists). Once again, thanks for the help!

I was lucky enough to find a cheap(er) copy of Book 3 on eBay, and can only echo what everyone else has said about the black books - they're absolutely worth it for the fluff of your Legion. Each one is filled to the brim with awesome artwork, fluff, and so on.
