I looked at a few armies to fill the role of the defensive army in AOS

1st The Khorne Bloodbound/Chaos
They have the Dread hold and I know it is not cheap, but I am willing to buy it (parts of it) if it will get me what I want.
They lack shooting, but the make up for this cool rues and cover to save them from enemy shooting.
I thought something along the lines of a few units of Warriors/blood warriors/bright kings? Supported by a Bloodsectrator and a Sorcerer Lord to reroll 1s for saves.
If going for Khorne the aspiring deathbringer, as well as the exalted deathbringer, are both solid picks one for boosting morale and the other boosting attacks.

2nd Stormcast Eternals
Take a Lord Castellant for saves and a Lord Relictor for healing, also one or two knights Questor to go after characters.
The line will be held by three units of Liberators, some Judicators with bows to force the enemy to come closer and a unit of paladin defenders to deal with monsters and dish out mortal wounds.
Also, I am deciding between Vandus and a common lord. Their abilities are both useful with one giving an offensive aura of 6" of plus 1 attack and the other giving a 24" aura of ignoring morale checks.

3rd Dispossessed and Ironweld
Cannons behind a firm gromil shield wall buffed by longbeards and runesmiths as well as oath stone Warden King.

The fourth option is a debatable one, can I make a defensive deathrattle/death army.

Your second two options are good choices. Dreadhold can't be bought as part of an army (unfortunately).

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

There is warscroll battalion including parts of the dreadhold.

Well if it's open or narrative play you can do whatever you like (provided it's cool with the opponent), obviously.

As a Free Peoples player I am offended you haven't acknowledged the incredible defensive capability of big blobs of Handgunners supported by Generals (And generally hiding behind a big blob of Guard to absorb charges). You can get as much as 2+ to hit from them, which with a 3+ wound and -1 rend is absolutely deadly when you have 60+ models,

I find that mixing Duardian, Freeguild and Ironweld can give you some wicked defensive dakka.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

Don't underestimate the defensive capabilities of the Slaves to Darkness. Chaos Warriors are some of the most durable battleline units in the game! Chaos Knights also have a ton of staying power, and you can add in a Warshrine (unmarked or Tzeentch are best for defense) to add a 6+ save after the save. StD doesn't have spectacular firepower, but they are tough to move.

2000 Khorne Bloodbound (Skullfiend Tribe- Aqshy)
1000 Tzeentch Arcanites (Pyrofane Cult - Hysh) in progress
2000 Slaves to Darkness (Ravagers)

Yeah I kniw sorry for not mentioning the freeguild, I just kind of don't have the money for such huge blobs.

StD are a good defensive army and they get only better in a chaosy fortress.
