Leslie Van Houten, one of the Manson "family" involved in 1969's La Bianca murders (she wasn't in on the Tate murders the previous night), has been recommended for parole....again.

It will be up to the parole board and the Governor (who can block it) to make the final decision.

If paroled, she'll be the first of the incarcerated Manson crew to get out of the joint alive (Susan "Sadie" Atkins died of brain cancer in 2009).

To be pedantic, Squeaky Fromme got out alive.

So far as Van Houten, I can't call it. On the one hand, she did 50 years, and how dangerous is a 70 year old lady? On the other hand, the killings were pretty brutal with really no mitigating factors. For me at least it's hard to feel strongly about it no matter which way it goes, other then for the historical interest. If she dies in prison it certainly won't be a tragedy imo. I haven't really seen that she's done much to be rehabilitated and she's sure had a pretty good window in which to do so.

I'm pretty much the same. I don't see the value in release, but I also don't see the value in keeping her locked up.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Put the needle in her. Reminder this clan of sick killers who tried to start a RACE WAR we're originally sentenced to death, only changed due to A court decision that banned executions for a period of time.

I'd bet at this point releasing a 70 year old lady would be worse than keeping her. She has spent her entire adult life behind bars, what kind of adult life skills does she possess? Friends, family? She'd be alone, after 50 years of the state controlling and providing every aspect of her life.

We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”

Good point, she should then be immediately released.

This is how I feel. It's hard to see how she would be a danger to the community or what the cost of her continued incarceration would really buy the taxpayers, and she's served more time than many for her crime and was very young at the time, but at the same time she committed an unspeakable act of brutality.

Even if released, her time left isnt long, the best years of her life were spent in prison, her family and friends now dead or so distantly removed as to be functionally so, she will never have a normal life or great prospects for happiness and none for family, she'll basically trade prison for massive culture shock and a bitter life of social isolation and a legacy of shame.

Hard to get worked up either way.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Nah, let her out so ANTIFA can beat her to death on live camera and then tell us that they're just peaceful fascists trying to save us from fascism.

That feeling when you're so desperate to turn a thread into US politics that you reach for the flimsiest thread.

Frankly, at this point if she's in jail or not is irrelevant, but the posts were already so charged with US hypocrisy that I couldn't resist seeing if I could get them to go the full Monty and and tip over into politics
