New to AoS but play 8th Ed 40k a lot so it has been a hard learning curve with the whole shooting issue. Got to grips that you can target characters etc and shoot into/ out of melee so long as you can pull LOS but does this always mean BIG characters are always going to be visible to anyone shooting unless you have BIG LOS blocking terrain - my Death General and Zombie Dragon got taken out easily by shooting from a Dark Elf army (who all appear to be able to shoot) even though all the enemy (including the arty type stuff) were in combat.

Presuming this was right but how do people deal with armies like Dark Elves who are going to hit you in the shooting phase with 2 attacks each (crossbows I think) and then hit you in melee as well... In the end my Hordes did their job and sort of saved the day but it was an eye opener to see the tough big units one turned...

Cheers

That's all normal in AoS. Dark Elves deal out a ton of shooting. The trick is to hit them fast and hard. They have little in the way of good generals and tend to be limited in troops. Big monsters always seem to die to shooting so you either have to hold them back, or just understand that shooting sucks against them. Zombies don't really have the big hitters, so your probably best holding the monsters back for the second wave.

you can also shoot WHILE in close combat... So you can still lay down fire support while you're tied up with a unit...

Or. Just point blank shoot the enemy...
