Hi everyone, I'm new. In my introduction post, Skinflint expressed interest in 1/72 fantasy miniatures.

There seem to be two companies active in this niche. Caesar Miniatures seems to target the Warhammer crowd, while Alliance's take on stock fantasy races is based on the Lord of the Rings films.

Caesar sets are available here.. You can get 1/72 equivalents of Warhammer dwarves, goblins, orcs, skaven and rather skink-ish lizardmen. Their high elves seem to have gone OOP, but are available on eBay. The undead set contains a male and a female vampire, one lich pose, skeleton warriors and, oddly, 8 Grim Reaper lookalikes.
Note that F104 is an OOP set of fantasy RPG adventurers including Conan, Gandalf, Legolas, Aragorn and some more generic types, with the female warriors and spellcasters having a Larry Elmore look.

Alliance Miniatures are best bought off eBay, where they can be found for $8 a box. Their elves, 2 sets of dwarves, 3 of orcs, 4 of half-orcs and their war trolls are blatantly based on the film interpretation of The Lord of the Rings. The half-orcs are Uruk-Hai, and show an as-yet-unproduced Saruman as general on the boxes. This means that while "half-orc" translates to human-sized 1/72 (25mm to top of head), orcs are 20mm while Caesar's are 25mm greenskins. They also produce four sets of the dead, light/heavy infantry/cavalry and warg cavalry.
However, there's more to the Alliance range that LotR. They've also produced Classical Amazons, who tend toward heroic nudity plus a woman in Scythian clothes (the two standard options for ancient Greek vase painters), "Modern Amazons", who are generic cheesecake warrior women, and Cimmerians. These last cover both loincloth-clad Conan types and Chaos warriors, split between two infantry sets. Oh yeah, and each of these "factions" has a cavalry set, with the Modern Amazons being far and away the best:

... that's right, you get 2x each lions, lionesses, elk, unicorns and UTAHRAPTORS to mount these women on!

Out of Production:

Arcane Legions was in production in 2009-10 (?) and is still being "clearance" at Miniature Market. However I would advise you not to pay $10 for the starter set or $5 for an army pack, as the prices drop to $5-7.50 and ~$4 during Black Friday and Spring Cleaning sales. These are in the odd position of being more useful for historical war gaming, with the starter getting you Roman legionaries, Cohort Sagittarii in legionary armor, ancient Egyptian archers, hoptiles, mummies (ah, there's the fantasy), Romans in steam armor, and Qin/Han troops.
