So after nearly a decade of playing 8th edition Warhammer Fantasy, my friend has convinced me to start a 40K army so that we can get some quick, skirmish games in. I am quite adept at 8th Fantasy rules, so I am somewhat familiar with the game mechanic, but still very unfamiliar with the game. After some looking at the various available armies, the Skitarii really appealed to me and I've bought a starter box for them. Hopefully this will be a good army to pursue. The other army that I liked was Space Wolves, but they just seemed a little overdone. And since my friend already has a Space Marine chapter (Salamanders, I think) and a Dark Eldar army, I thought I'd go with something a little different.

This looked like a good Forum to get stuck in! Hopefully you guys can teach me much about 40K! If anyone wants to talk 8th edition Fantasy, I'm your guy.

Skitarii is also very cool.
8th ed 40k rules, compared to 8th ed fantasy, are a bit... dumbed down.
Anyways, I am looking forward to added realism with house rules and with hopefully chapter approved additions of things like realistic cover and terrain rules, realistic vehicle movement rules, just less abstraction and more realism...

I've heard that the rules are much easier to pick up, but I still have no idea what a Plasma Pistol vs a Flamer will do, for example. I'm sure it won't take me too long to learn it, but while I wait for my rule books to arrive, I'm kinda stuck scratching my head and watching BatReps.

Thanks! I love the look and feel of the Skitarii, but I kinda want to stray from the typical red I see in almost every picture. Is that just a HUGE mistake or is there some reason that I SHOULD paint them red?

There's no reason you have to paint them red at all, choose your favourite colour (personally I think green or purple would look good)

It's your army, man. Make them black and hot pink

Sweet. I just didn't want to get ready to play a game and have someone say, "Sorry, man. You can't say they're from Mars because they aren't red." That kinda stuff really gets under my skin.
