I know that plasma scions are the kings at the moment, so i guess this thread is here to pose 2 questions.

1. are melta scions crap? i just painted a squad and im not sure if it was a waste of time
2. can you give the sergeant of the scion squad a plasma pistol? (i dont own the index and apparently the codex is on the way so i dont want to buy one just to answer this question)

feel free to talk about other options for scions loadouts, bc i would be interested if anything other than plasma is worth taking.

Melta isn't crap, but it's no plasma either. For friendly games it isn't going to hurt any. I might not take them to a tourney though.

Yeah, the sarge can have a plasma pistol.

He knows that I know and you know that he actually doesn't know the rules at all.

There are a few issues with deepstriking melta as i see it:

12" range means that you will never get to roll 2 dice and pick the highest when you land.

Smart opponents will bubble-wrap things you want to melta. It's much harder to do this with plasma as they have more range and more viable targets.

Rapid firing, overcharging plasma is actually only slightly worse than long range melta against vehicles, and cost less.

In my opinion, the only place for melta is in armies that have the ability to quickly move melta up in transports, and get it into half range. Sisters are the main army that come to mind here.

Probably work

All my squads are basically PG/PG/PP at 5 man if I'm planning on deep striking.

If I'm going to be on the table, then I have 10 man with 4xPG and a PP. My plasma pistols are magnetized, so I can swap them out if I need/want to, but I haven't ever wanted for those points back yet, so here we are. I think I have 40 or 50 scions built out that way.

I also have four meltas that I sometimes run as a 5-man or command squad if I'm playing at high enough points. They're probably more of a vanity piece than anything else, and admittedly have never been terribly useful, but they're not that expensive, and I always take a thing or two that looks really scary on paper for a little psychological warfare. That being said, they'll usually strip some wounds off a high profile target before they get prioritized into oblivion.

I keep sometimes seeing people talk about the HSVGs, and I'm coming around to this idea of moving and shooting heavy weapons not being the most horrible thing ever (especially on BS3+ models) but until plasma stops being so damned good, there's just no way to justify it for me. The Taurox Prime should always have the HSVG and the confetti cannon though, IMHO.

Off topic: you should check your pms.

No mention of the hot shot volleygun? No one likes it?

AM is getting a new codex soon so who knows what potential weapon pricing changes we'll see with that.

Funnily enough, Meltaguns are actually better for "busting through" bubble wrap. You can order the squad to "Move! Move! Move!" to get them 6"+d6" away from their landing spot, and since Meltaguns are Assault weapons, you can still take your shots, albeit at -1 to hit. This can be a great way to dump a bucket of wounds onto something your opponent thought safe from deep striking troops.

Unfortunately this still leaves them with a fairly niche application versus Plasma Guns, and it doesn't help that they're significantly more expensive to boot. Until Plasma receives some sort of price hike, it's pretty much the ideal choice for Scions.

Melts makes more sense on veterans. Right now it can't compete with plasma on scions.

Hsvg do great work, but you want to take advantage of the range. Drop them in a good defensive spot with a nice field of fire. They're great. Last game I dropped in my opponents deployment zone after he moved up and threw a big wrench in his plans.

Meltaguns are themselves utterly lethal. The trick is to get them in their ideal range. If you can figure that thing out, Meltas can be worth it.

However, that means Scions are clearly not the most ideal meltagun-troops because their thing is Deepstriking. Instead, you'd need a successful Disembark from a transport to make use of melta. Of course, that means you also need to spend points for the said transport... which adds to the cost of Meltaguns. I don't know, perhaps I'll axe my meltagun-command squad some day but they have previously always pulled their weight.

Either way, it's still better to rely more on plasmaguns. Especially with Scions.

Meltaguns can also be given to to rough riders, which is an interesting idea I would like to try.
