HARK!!! REJOICE!!! if you want to play 40k dwarfs GW has given you the option just buy a gak tonne of Kharadron Overlords (Granted you will have to use rules for other armies but they fit right in). If you want the old squat models (I have a heap but i don't want to sell) So go ebay... and no rules for them for what 15years I think or so.

14k Generic Space Marine Chapters
20k Deathwatch
10k Sisters of Battle
3k Inquisition
4k Grey Knights
5k Imperial Guard

The Squats came out during Rouge Trader days, when 40K was still a tongue in cheek version of Warhammer Fantasy in space. When the later editions came out GW started taking the 40K setting and fluff much more seriously.

In the end they just couldn't find a way to grim dark trike riding dwarfs and egg shaped powered armor with a serious face. They decided to quietly bench the army by simply not producing any rules or models for them.

They are occasionally mentioned peripherally in the fluff.

From what I gather in the current starter book they are listed as a non-extinct strain of sanctioned abhuman (just as in 6th/7th edition).

They existed, are recognised as a stable human variant (not a mutation) and according to (in universe) official sources still exist.

That's pretty much the scope of modern squat lore for the last decade as far as I know.

They are alive and well in 30k you can use guard rules to play squats, you could convert aos dwarves or mantic has a decent looking range.

They played like a mix of imperial guard, marines and orks. The design team at the time admitted they sold very well, but the army didn't have a unique identity on the table top, so they got, squatted.

Basically, the design team was lazy, and didn't want to be bothered redesigning the Squats to have a unique identity.

^this.

It really pissed me off that they squatted the squats, I had to mow a ton of lawns to buy my Army and cuz they were too lazy to design badassness into them and they killed em off. I quit when that happened and hadn't played until 8th dropped. I am planning to integrate a couple of Kharadron's into my current army (SM) like Endrinriggers, Arkanaughts, sky wardens (w 40k weapons).

The decision to make them abhumans was a clear indication of the lack of inspiration at the point of conception.

Perhaps Rick Priestley used up all his best ideas for the Eldar. Their backstory doesn't really leave much room for another major "good" Xenos faction. The Eldar dominated the galaxy and then Slaanesh's birth led to a clear out which allowed mankind to expand and dominate.

Years ago I came up with a simply storyline based on the traditional Elf/Dwarf enmity. In my version of the backstory, the Squats are an additional race created by the Old Ones to provide the industrial powerhouse behind the war effort against the Yngir.

Following the defeat of the Yngir the Eldar and Squats rule the galaxy together peacefully until the two races [insert your own imagined slight here] which leads to a prolonged and destructive war. Eventually, with no end to the conflict in sight, the Eldar and Squat noble houses agree to settle the score with a single combat between the two races' greatest champions - the stipulation being that the losers must exile themselves and not return for at least 20,000 years. The Eldar champion emerges victorious (with a hint of chaotic intervention therefore suggesting that the seeds of the fall were planted here) and the Squats retreat in massive forge ships (a hint of irony that the Craftworld Eldar would exile themselves from their own civilization).

Fast forward to the 41st Millennium and the Squats' new home galaxy is in the process of being overwhelmed by The Tyranids and refugees begin pilgrimages back to their ancestral homelands, still bitter at the loss of their civilization and both shocked and dismayed to discover how the Eldar squandered the galaxy in their absence.

Completely derivative (I actually wrote some background for this years ago that was far more developed) but I think it fits nicely into the existing backstory.

I also like the idea of Nids and Squats being sworn enemies and it makes the Tyranid threat seem that much greater.

I think they should incorporate the chaos dwarf aspect with the old imperial/marine/orky squats would be such a cool army.

Can you imagine bull centaur like dread/dwarfs?

Blunderbuss/super shotguns

Slave/servant race goblins(zoats) even?maybe?

They delved too greedily and too deep.

Wonder if they will be the 'new' race hinted at?
