This is a neat little phenomenon I've noticed that happens sometimes - Dice rolls or rules or some other effect lines up that ends up telling a small story of one sort or another.

For example - Guilliman gives three Command Points. Taking two bonus relics costs, as it happens, three Command Points. So when I take a list that has Guilliman and maxed-out Relics for my Space Marines, I like to imagine that Guilliman explicitly brought those relics along with the express purpose of bestowing them to those who would need them.

Or, for a more visceral example - I was playing a game recently where it was Knights VS Knights. My Knight was standing on a raised hill but was locked in combat with his, which was at the foot of the hill. Mine happens to be modelled with one foot behind himself rather than both planted. Normally, this gives the sense that he's running through the battlefield, but in this instance it looked a whole lot like he was winding up for a kick. I used nothing but Stomp attacks and killed my opponent's Knight, kicking his face over and over from my elevated position.

Anyone else have fun anecdotes like these?

Krieg! What a hole...

That time when I managed to destroy a Stompa using only two Grenadiers, who promptly died in the explosion, it felt just right.

Friend dropped a bunch of soldiers from a flier about midway betwen his artillery and my units, so it was 12 inches to my big unit and 12 inches to his artillery from where he dropped. His artillery scattered and two individual rolls scattered right into his airborne infantry. They basically got right in the way of the shots, taking the full brunt of their own artillery.

Unit of marine scouts occupying multiple levels of a communications tower, sent in my gargoyles to deal with them, there then followed an epic 4 turn combat between the slowly dwindling scouts and the frantically flapping nids, on all levels of the tower with the walkways and gantries festooned with models....looked truly epic.

Had an occurrence that comes straight from the fluff, or near as possible in a normal game, 2 maulerfiends chewing the legs off an imperial knight (Instead of a reaver titan). Had it struck me at the time, I'd have had one against each leg.

I once had a match where a squad of 5 (or was it 8?) berserkers were killed down to a man (the champion) by tau gunfire. The champ managed to make it into combat next turn, and proceeded to smear the tau against every conceivable surface. This took a turn or two so the battlesuit, seeing this, hightailed it out of there. But the Zerk would not have it, and chased it down. The battlesuit pilot just barely held off the raging zerker, who managed to cripple the suit (down to 1 wound) before succombing to his wounds.

Everyone at the shop agreed I had walked away with a morale victory that day.

Imperial Guard superheavy tanks driving into assault.

I know some people are upset by how good Baneblades are at being in melee, but seriously, it always feels like a scene from a novel.

Damn near all of my games end up with my superheavies wading through the enemy, spitting fire in all directions, like advancing warships into a hurricane.

It's just like the artwork.

My Nurgle Lord on Palanquin charged heads up with his spawn into the Necrons' Legion command as the mission was to kill the Necron overlord. We played a scenario from the fenris book but with CSM vs. Necrons instead of Wolves vs. Daemons... turned out to be a bad idea.
In the unit of the overlord were also two lords and a cryptek. My Nurgle Lord charges, his overlord refuses the challenge, Nurgle guy kills the first puny lord with ease - and immediately turns into a spawn.

As a Salamanders player, there are a few mortal enemies (Dark Eldar and Death Guard) and I've had games against a mix of those two. Fighting against the armies that held them down in the past.

I've also had a Captain fighting a Tau Commander in melee, the head of two great forces head to head.

A Blood Angels Outrider Detachment dropping 3 squads of Assault Marines around me felt fluffy.

A huge horde of Genestealers bounding towards my battleline and eating.. everything..

Had a rattling lose his whole squad, make the morale check, then charge 12 inches into darkstrider after eating an entire gunline's overwatch before bashing darkstrider in the skull with his rifle, tying him down long enough for me tohave him get rolled over by better units.

Something about an angry short man rushing ahead to bash a filthy lizard goat in the face with his rifle feels right.

Probably work

In 5th, I had a squad of five dire avengers shoot into a company command squad, left a couple guys alive with the commander. Assaulted in and killed the other two guys. Commander, without any upgrades and with all hope abandoned, manages to beat them all to death over the course of a couple turns. He got his medals painted up just a bit shinier that day.

It's more like an anti-fluff moment, but more recently, I had a commissar with power fist uppercut the head off of the swooping hawk phoenix lord. It felt good.

Vanished Completely

Will always remember a Commissioner putting down a charging Daemon Prince, the only one I ever had simply pop into existence due to boon roll at that....

My pimped out Melee Lord slaughtered a Unit of guardsmen as... well... as one slaughters guardsmen and got turned into a Prince - I was not impressed with the loss of war-gear, by the way
The guard player focused fire a lot on this Prince whenever it was not locked in combat, as they still are guardsmen so what ever will they do in close combat against a Prince but squish?
It does eventually get brought down to a single Wound but, as I was already loosing badly by that point like usual I was more invested in seeing just what would take out this one Prince and kept charging away

Daemon Prince Charges a Unit with a Commissioner attached
Everyone else wiffs on Overwatch, player left Commissioner for last as if he knew what was coming
Calmly he rolls that one last dice, Commissioner Shoots - Hits - Wounds - Right through the Invulnerable save... downed the Daemon Prince
I then demanded he execute one of his own men, for their terrible shooting prior... he did, I really do like Guard Players!

Played demons against white scars. His bikers stopped exactly 18" from my soul grinder and fired multi-meltas, which all missed/saved by demon save. Then, I decided to charge the Soul Grinder and needed exactly 12". He fired over watch, hit with the meltas, stripped some hull points but no penetration, then I rolled a 12" and massacred them.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love

I was playing Deathguard against my friends Dark Angels/Ultramarines. It was a narrative game where he was laying siege to my stronghold. My warlord is known as 'the Unending Blight'. Lore wise he used to be a siegebreaker in 30k. I deep struck him, and only him, in my friends back line and he proceeded to endure 4 full rounds of shooting+Combat and only lost 1 wound while killing 2 company masters a librarian and a lot of marines.

It was glorious

Not a 40k moment, but my best one by far was 2nd ever tabletop game, playing LOTR against my brother using GW store models.

Balrog was was pursing the fellowship but fell to his death when Gandalf destroyed the bridge as per the scenario rules! Gimli and Aragon had already been splatted however so not entirely movie accurate.

As far as 40k goes, Guilliman cutting the head off (ie doing 18 CC wounds to) a Gargantuan Squiggoth was pretty sweet.

I think my favorite was the time I played my old Wolves against a friend's Orks and it came down to 2 turns of Herald Deathwolf on his own, holding out against 60 Boyz. He killed about 20 of them, and I only lost the game by one point.

I love hearing stories like this, really helps bring the narrative and the universe to life. Surely this Lord is marked by Nurgle and will ascend to Daemonhood!

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

Perhaps! As soon as the new models come out my friend and I will be running a Deathguard vs Dark Angels campaign
It'll be glorious.

Other moment that wasn't fluffy but was extremely funny was my Necrons vs Deathwatch... Command Barge chased captain Artemis for 3 turns straight.

(Game in 7th edition)
I had an IG Special weapon team jump out of a Vendetta gunship,
their scatter landed them "on" a speeding Hellhound

So in my imagination they dive out, pull their chutes, land safely and then get flattened by the tank that's moving too fast to turn.....

Even funnier, the exact same thing happened to them in the next game too....

-In a game of 30k, My loyalist Luna Wolves took on the Night Lords and the Night Haunter himself as part of a three game campaign. The LW thought they had Conrad on the run and proceeded to surround him with Plasma and open fire. When the smoke cleared there was a very angry Night Haunter standing in a smoking crater...

-Another game of 30k, My Luna Wolves squared off against some Traitor Mechanicum with Knight support. My unit of Reavers charged in to finish off the wounded Knight with Melta Bombs and power fists. They took out the knight who went max critical explosion and took out everyone but the Chieftain, who was left wandering a smoking crater going "Mawp....Mawp....Mawp."

"I was never a Son of Horus. I was and remain a Luna Wolf. A proud son of Cthonia, a loyal servant of the Emperor."

Recasts are like Fight Cub. No one talks about it, but more people do it then you realize.

7th Edition Orks vs Chaos game. Had a Daemon Prince flying above my backfield so I had my shoota boyz try to gun it down but all 40 of them failed to get an unsaved wound through.
