Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

Toronto, Ontario

Hello everyone. I've been sitting on 2 boxes of Calth since they came out and with 8th edition out now (while fun it's just not my cup of tea as I miss comparative weapon skills, vehicle facing and moral checks), I took the plunge and now I'm 'all in' on The XII. I've played 2 proper 30k games now and am loving it. I'm 2 boxes of Calth and 2 of Prospero deep, so I'm finishing off my pool of bodies to draw from and now working on modeling some Consuls. So here's the big question... When did chaplains start wearing skull helmates? My 40k army is CSM, who's all 300ish models are all "special snowflakes", but that's not the astetic I want for my legionaries, even their officers. Aside from weapons, I'm trying to keep any differentiation to be as low key as possible. My praetor has the Calth character chest piece without the cape, my librarian will have a single "book" shoulderpad and aside from the 'toolfist' my apothecaries will just get the leather skirt. I was thinking of giving my chaplain a skull helmate, but I'm not sure if that future-historically accurate. Can anyone tell me when the skull helmates became a thing for Chaplains?

Prepare yourselves for the onslaught men. The enemy is waiting, but your Officers are courageous and your bayonettes sharp! I have at my disposal an entire army of Muskokans, tens of thousands of armour and artillery supporting millions upon tens of millions of the Imperium's finest fighting men with courage in their bellies, fire in their hearts and lasguns in their hands. Emperor show mercy to mine enemies, for as sure as the Imperium is vast, I will not!

The skull helmets is a tradition that originated from the Word Bearers legion (just like the winged mace and black armour). I don't think the other legions would have adopted it during the Heresy, Word Bearers being traitors and all. It probably happened much later, at about the same time Lorgar's book became accepted as religious scripture for the Imperium (not that anyone remembered Lorgar had written it by then).

From what I've read, Skull masks were originally worn by senior members of the Imperial Heralds, renamed to Chaplains once they became the Word Bearers. They spread after the Council of Nikaea to other Legions.

Originally they were essentially counselors, senior members who were mentors, guides, and sympathetic ears to the Legion and its members. Not all Legions had official Chaplains, but those that didn't had their own group who essentially did the same thing.

I do believe that skull masks were used throughout, since it was something originally passed on from the Word Bearers, but I know that in 40K it's used as a reminder and emulation of the Emperor's face and fury after the Battle for Terra.

You should be totally fine giving your chaplain a skull helmet. Many of your dudes would probably wear skull helmets anyways, being World Eaters.

I guess I like the idea of playing games much more than playing them...
