I love Florida. This little gem comes from my home of Manatee County.

How hard would it be to make a plugin that subtitles video with sign language, like we already have with text? Seems to me that should be a trivial fix.

That might be just as bad. Given that speech to text plugins often hilariously slaughter what was actually said(anybody watch the solar eclipse livestream?), I can only imagine it would be worse with sign language. You'd probably have a worse situation that what this guy did.
Of course, subtitles would have made a sign language interpreter unnecessary in the first place. Deaf people can read.

It's going to be significantly harder than text, unless you transcribed into text and used a "wingdings' type font to display it. If it's an optional stream that can be enabled/disabled, embedding an additional overlay video on top of your normal video is going to present quite a bit of overhead, and you'd have to make it large enough to be easily visible. The alternative is that you have a library of every possible hand configuration already built into the plugin, in which case, it's likely going to be huge. You might be able to do something clever with 3d rending to cheat a lot of that, but then it becomes resource intensive and might not necessarily work on every device.
Sign language as a whole was supposed to be a means of quickly communicating where things like text weren't convenient or possible, or so I thought. What does displaying sign language solve that displaying text wouldn't? I figure in this case, the sign language here is for where CC isn't available, and for the people there in person.
Ultimately, CC is still horrible and unreliable, and I'm stunned to see that still be the case. I mean, google voice transcription has about a 95+% success rate, at least on the voice mails I get. Why are those systems still so horrible?

I'm pretty sure that the worst CC currently available would have been far superior to this.
Of course, since Manatee County has a company of professional ASL interpreters who regularly contract with the county, they could (should)
have gone that route, rather than just grabbing a guy who said "I have a deaf brother" saying "he'll do."

Florida, Cat 5 hurricane. This is about #12,525 on the list of problems Florida has to deal with right now. People get a fething grip.

I dunno. I watch tv while at the gym with CC turned on. A few channels are literally just garbage characters flying across a screen. I'm not sure what's going on there. Meanwhile, other channels sometimes have jarring issues, but are readable enough that you get a reasonable understanding of what's being said. So "the worst" probably wouldn't have been better, but I don't think it would have been much worse either.
I'm just stunned that the system is still so inconsistent and generally bad.

And he fethed up. If you're watching the governor babble for information, its already too late for you. Problem? Yes. Is there an entire major school for deaf people there? -yep (a family friend has worked there). Is it an issue? No. We have entire islands that have been by the God equivalent of an A bomb and not satisfied another one is going the same way. No one there gives a flying feth because they are, you know homeless now.

No one's saying that there aren't larger problems, Fraz. It's just that if people tune in to official news about hurricanes, they need to hear official news about hurricanes, not bear monsters.
County officials made a dumb choice and Florida Man struck again. I don't think this story is going to eclipse the rest of the hurricane news.

I'm guessing that any deaf people watching the channel most likely have CC enabled, or someone with them who could help. So they would still have had reasonable access to the information.
Yes, they really screwed up by not having a good translator there, but in the big picture its a minor issue.
And for me personally, every deaf person I have met has been freaky good at lip reading.

Touche. Your point is taken. However if bear monsters are on the loose, then I would want to know about it!*

Bear Monster Survival tip: Let your wiener dog loose with the leash still attached. The dog will run at and around the Bear Monster, taking it down like a snowspeeder around an AT-AT.

Make sure you've got the proper repellent with you!
Meanwhile, in the northwest, a desperate Wyoming sheriff makes his last broadcast as the door shakes under repeated blows from Ursus, the Elder Grizzly. He begs the public not to disturb the warding stones they have sacrificed so much to consecrate, for that is their only defense. Next to him, a man in a yellow shirt signs that people should get to high ground and bring a raincoat.

On the bright side, at least there was pizza involved.
Come to think of it, since Florida does have bears, perhaps he was taking initiative to warn residents of the danger of possible bearnados.

True, but bearicanes tend to spawn bearnados. Especially in the bands of the northeastern quadrant.

A true Floridian I am. Lived all over this state. Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Jupiter, Orlando. Must say this is probably one of the worst places to live in the country. The weather is terribly hot 8 months of the year. It rains a lot. People can't drive here. Everything is far apart so cars are required. About the only good thing we have here is no state tax and cheap land.
