Recently got back into the hobby, constructed my new Eldar army, went to buy some Floquil primer only to find that it is out of production.

I always sucked at spray primer, I could never do it very well. When I found Floquil grey primer it solved my problems, I could just brush it on. Primed my entire Necron army with it.

Now that I'm ready to paint my Eldar I want to find a replacement for Floquil primer. Does anyone else brush on your primer? If so, what brand do you use? I always hear the brand Vallejo talked about and found some white Vallejo primer on Amazon, has anyone tried it? If not, what other brand?

I've seen a few threads on this topic on other miniatures/railroad forums but I wanted to ask specifically for 40k, thanks.

I've used a few different types. Army Painter Brush-On is alright for small things.

But I swear by Gesso. It's acrylic, can have paint mixed into it and it comes in a few different colours. The black Gesso is as matte as anything.

There's white too but I haven't been able to find any locally. A little 4 floz tub would keep you going forever.

I've used Gesso, Vallejo and Army Painter; they're all good.

Thanks. I'm going to try out the vallejo primer first, but the gesso looks like it could work really well. Perhaps in the future.

Ya, its a shame about Floquil, only got to use those a few times in my life.

I searched around on other forums and found this:

"Tamiya matchs a lot of Floquil Colors, is acrylic. For instance Floquil Depot Buff, Tamiya XF-57 Buff, perfect match and many others.

Citadel will match many Testers colors and has colors most have never heard of. Used on Warhammer Games Workshop Vehicles & Figures.

Humbrol, solvent and acrylic, enamels and flats."

I'd go for tamiya if you still want to take a crack at spraying and this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH5OHYfSq5A

I use gesso myself. The stuff works great and it's near idiot proof.

I've tried a few brush on primers and was never satisfied with the results so always end up back at the rattle cans or airbrushed lacquer primer.

Stupid question time, if I were to get some of this Gesso stuff, would I be purchasing this? < https://www.amazon.com/Ross-R6257-Gesso-473-Ml-Gray/dp/B002643CZS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1506199144&sr=8-7&keywords=Gesso+paint+on+primer >

I'm also kind of curious what the process is. It sounds like you paint it on differently than you would on a miniature. Any veteran paint-on-primers that could shed some light on that?

I didn't like gesso. It goes on thick like pudding then shrinks, but it stays very water reactive. If you paint with very thinned paints you might run into issues, I did.

Vallejo brush on is nice, but I only use it for fixing spots where aerosol primer / paint rubbed off.

This is what I got:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BMZVBQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Didn't work too well for me. It was thin and did not cover the surface evenly. Did I get the wrong type of primer? It was vastly different than using the Floquil.

I think I will try this, and use the lack of Floquil as an excuse to learn to use spray primers.

I'm kind of obsessed with 40k right now, I'm already constructing my CSM army. I think I will try gesso on that army just to try it out. Thanks for all the tips, I figure if I try enough different techniques out I'm bound to find something I like.

Really? What brand are you using? I use Liquitex, and it dries waterfast just like any other acrylic I have ever used.

Now showing The Fellowship of the Ring, along with some Dreadball Captains!
