I've recently bought some models to start playing AoS after a 11 year hiatus from the WHFB universe.

It was my intention to start with a really small, basic force and build out once I'd got to grips with the new game.

I picked myself up some kitbashed Bloodknights for battleline units, and a Vampire Lord on Abyssal Terror for my general.

I've only just realised with the the new .pdf for VLoAT that it no longer has the soulblight keyword. Does that mean that there is no other way to use it besides an ally in a larger game? I'm really surprised that they would reduce the options for an already limited faction.

I was trying to avoid using the VLoZD in my starting 1000 points just so it would leave me something to model and a project to tackle once I had improved my painting/modeling but it seems GW wants to push people who are starting Death onto the more expensive box sets.

Has anyone played Soulblight at 1000 points without a dragon? or should I just skip over and aim for a bigger starting army?

The main thing about the updated rules, is that units like the Abyssal Terror are not sold anymore, so anything which is no longer sold has been changed to be their own 'legacy thing'. I think the idea is to eventually phase them out.

For Soulblight, the real heavy hitter is a Vampire Lord on dragon. Your only other option for a hero is the coven throne or a foot vampire.

Dragon Knights are fantastic, and the bat swarms are great at giving debuffs to shooting units.

I saw a Soulblight army do really well at the Captial City Bloodbath event last month, so they are a tough army.

1000pts would be tough, but you could make it work.

A lot of the factions in AOS are small, but with the new allegiance abilities Soulblight get a huge buff. If you like the idea of a vampire army, defininetly stick with them. You might want to leave renforcement points to summon things outside the allegiance.
