So I know I've seen a lot that BaC and BoP are really good starting points for Horus Heresy, and looking at the contents I have no doubt, but is it the best place to start a space wolves legion? I know BoP has the character for the wolves, but is the praetor in terminator armor and the dark apostle good options for hq? I know when I do start I'll be getting Russ and his wolfkin, and I'm sure both boxes will completely max me out on infantry. Just is it the best place to start? sorry for rambling, sick with a fever but just wanted to ask before I get 100% into it.

Probably not so much, without some solid conversion work at least. Even in 30K, the Wolves just couldn't be "normal".

You'll probably want some of these;

Along with some 40k Wolf bits.

I would say depends on your budget. The boxes have really good value if you use all the models, and if you are good at painting then you can get by with just the base models, and even just buying the decal sets (mix 40k ones off eBay and 1 or 2 FW ones to stay cheap) can look good if done right, so don't feel like you can't do the Vlka Fenryka if you don't have the bits or great converting skills. Still, the FW upgrade sets are great and if you can afford at least one you can use them for sergeants, veterans, or other IC. Just make sure you know which armor mark you want so you get the right shoulders!

The praetor and chaplain/apostle can work, ideally you'd add SW bits, but for the praetor why not say he's a Terran/non Fenris veteran who was used to rocking his old early crusade pattern baldness before uniting with Russ?

Ok, well I did find the Great Wolf's host, and the space wolves task force on forgeworld, and they both come with the upgrade set. I may look into getting both since russ comes with the host, I was also looking into maybe the mastodon since it can hold a lot of units. what are the thoughts on this heavy transport?

The thing about Space Wolves in 30K is that they were not nearly as deviant from the other Legions as the Chapter is from other Chapters in 40K. In other words, painting some Norse knots here and there, adding a couple Norse runes, and if ya got them, some of the wolf iconography from 40K and you'll be fine.

Get a couple FW Space Wolf Upgrade sets and either a couple 40K Space Wolf Upgrade sets or a Space Wolves Pack and use the bits very sparingly through the force. It wasn't until after the Heresy and the breaking of the Legions that the Space Wolves really went feral.

I honestly think the best way to go to make Grey Slayers is to buy a Mk4/3 plastic box and a box of 40k Grey Hunters, it'll give you the power weapons you need and a bunch of cool bits to stick on them to make them all wolfy.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

this is the way to go, as someone with a large 30k space wolf army I have used plastic parts from the 40k kits to make them look the wild and tribal as they should, you really dont need the FW upgrade kits at all, in fact I would only use them for either command squads, veterans or converting up deathsworn. same for the shoulder pads especially as the legion transfer sheet is incredibly nice. I absolutely recommend getting book 7 and the legions astartes army list book as it will provide you with all the info with what you should be buying for your legion.
