So having decided i want to modle some Rubric marines for my Tzeench renegade chapter, however id prefer to have them not have anything to do with thousand sons or the black legion. So would it be possible for say through earning Tzeenchs favor say a squad of former sternguard to become similar to rubicae without becoming a spirit trapped in armour? My thinking if this is i want to use regular csm heads almost like chaos sternguard

If you want to sure.

Technically all rubricae are at least former thousand sons but they are not all loyal to Magnus a great many have struck out on their own to their own cabals/ renegades.

It's an open background fella.

I'd say as long as the models are recognisable and standout amongst the rest of your force (possibly a separate paint job, typically the best way to spot Rubricae) few opponents would give much of a fig. All about being able to tell at a glance what each unit is.

Previous codexes (haven't read the current one!) have justified Rubrics being in non-Thousand Sons armies by saying that their leading Aspiring Sorcerers are very mercenary. They'll join up with other forces and warbands to fulfill their own purposes, whether it be for wealth, power, influence, some kind of legitimate alliance or just good old fashioned spite. Since the Rubric marines themselves are essentially automatons they'll just go wherever their master goes.

Having full-on proper Rubrics that have nothing to do with their parent legion is a bit iffy. I think a snippet of background somewhere says the Black Legion have managed to replicate the effects of Ahriman's spell, so it's not TOTALLY unreasonable but it seems like the kind of thing only someone with incredible resources and cream-of-the-crop psykers could pull off. You could go for a "not-Rubric" angle, where a Tzeentch following squad of marines is infused with the sorcerous power of their god but need a psyker to hang around with them to control the magic and make sure they don't explode into Chaos Spawn or spontaneously combust or suffer some other terrible magic-related fate.

Thank you everyone for your answers
Im honestly considering just going the route of
Sorceror and his rubrics make an alliance with my renegades eventually becoming part of the chapter. However i do have one further question
As per the black legion series when Khayon killed a sorceror he was able to control his rubrics. Would this only be possible by a thousand Sons sorceror or could any tzeench sorceror do it.
